The base ten division algorithm relies upon your knowledge of base ten multiplication facts. For example: You begin this problem by noting that 23 goes into 71 three times – you can do this easily because you once memorized “3x2 = 6” and “4x2 = 8” Because you have never memorized multiplication facts in bases other than ten, before you can begin a long division problem, you must list the single digit multiples of your divisor:
example 1: 3 too big
example 1: 3 multiply
example 1: 3 subtract in base 5
example 1: 3 13 6 subtract in base 5 1
example 1: 3 134 bring down the 4
example 1: 4 3 134 21 goes into 134 four times
example 1: multiply 4 3 134 134
example 1: 45 3 134 134
example 2: 4 too big
example 2: 4 subtract in base 7
example 2: 4 10 subtract in base 7 1
example 2: 4 15 10 subtract in base 7 1
example 2: 4 151
example 2: 5 4 151
example 2: 57 4 151 151
