Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s July 22 – August 4, 2018 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) PRESS SPACE BAR TO CONTINUE To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible. . I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW: • Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. • Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. • Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” • The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” • Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. • Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. BIBLE QUOTE What is in a Weekly World Watch? Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. News Photo This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. HEADLINE The source of the headline and the date are included. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. EVENT This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (andy@weeklyworldwatch.co.uk). Please note that these are personal thoughts and the aim is purely to stimulate Bible study. COMMENT This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version.(Book, chapter, and verse)

The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. Syrian government retakes Golan Heights frontier with Israel Associated Press, July 30, 2018 The Syrian government regained control of the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights for the first time in seven years on Monday, after Islamic State-linked militants gave up their last pocket of territory in the area. The breakthrough against the militants, reported by state media and an opposition-linked war monitoring group, capped a six-week-long campaign to retake the southwest corner of the country. Rebels captured the area along the Golan Heights after a popular uprising broke out against President Bashar Assad in 2011. An IS-linked outfit known as the Khaled bin Al-Waleed Army later seized the area from the opposition fighters. Israel has largely kept to the sidelines of the Syrian civil war, but has said it will not allow Iran or the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah to establish a permanent military presence near the frontier. Both are allied with Assad and have provided crucial military support to his forces. EVENT COMMENT Slowly and surely Assad has retaken control of Syria with Russia’s support. But this has come at a huge cost for Israel. Russia allowed Israel’s sworn enemies into Syria to help it’s aims of helping Assad achieve victory. Those enemies are Iran and Hezbollah. This week Syria has finally taken back control of the frontier with Israel – the Golan Heights. But the delicate status quo that existed before the Syrian uprising has changed. Israel now faces a much more confident Assad – after all he has world super power backing i.e. Russia. Israel now faces Hezbollah and Iran on their doorstep. Yes everything has changed for Israel. With Bible in hand we know something must occur that sparks the events of Isaiah 17 and the final and total destruction of Damascus. We can surely see now how Israel could get drawn into the Syrian conflict…. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 17:1-2)
And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD. Hamas-Israel military confrontation looks likely Washington Free Beacon, August 2, 2018 Since March, Israel and Hamas have been in a war of attrition that neither wants to escalate into a full-blown confrontation. Ironically, that is exactly where things are leading. Netanyahu just announced the cancellation of his visit to Colombia due to tension in the south. Incendiary kites and balloons not only light up thousands of acres of Israeli crops and forests, but also Israeli television screens. During the periodic rocket barrage, the last one two weeks ago, Israelis are also treated to the sight of families huddling in bomb shelters. This week marked a shift in tone from southern residents who so far have shown remarkable patience. Their regional representatives took to the airwaves to say that the Army must do more. Adding an exclamation point to their anger was news that a balloon bomb made it as far as the city of Beersheba—a distance of 30 miles, raising fears about just how far these aerial attacks can go. (The balloons were filled with helium, which Israel allowed into the Gaza Strip for medical purposes.) EVENT COMMENT There is trouble brewing on Israel’s northern border – but also trouble brewing on their southern border with Gaza. Hamas has been needling Israel for months - sending rockets, fire balloons, incendiary kites and using snipers to kill Israeli soldiers. Israel has restrained from invasion or a large scale military response. This is mainly because Netanyahu has enough to worry about with the Golan area in the north. But patience is wearing thin and this article explains that confrontation is likely with Hamas. The Bible says that Israel WILL remove the pricking briers that surround her. And they will… BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 28:24)
Russia to deploy military police on Golan Heights Reuters, August 2, 2018 Russia will deploy its military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel, its defense ministry said on Thursday, after weeks of mounting volatility in the area. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s sweeping away of rebels in southwestern Syria has worried Israel, which believes it could allow his Iranian backers to entrench their troops close to the frontier. Underlining the tensions, Israel killed seven militants in an overnight air strike on the Syrian-held part of the Golan Heights, Israeli radio said on Thursday. Sergei Rudskoi, a senior Russian defense ministry official, said that Russian military police had on Thursday begun patrolling in the Golan Heights and planned to set up eight observation posts in the area. He said the Russian presence there was in support of United Nations peacekeepers on the Golan Heights who, he said, had suspended their activities in the area in 2012 because their safety was endangered. EVENT COMMENT Reuters reported this week that Russia had deployed its military police just 2km from Israel’s border. This was supposed to give Israel confidence that although Assad was now back in control of this area Russian military police would add some extra security for Israel. However Debkafile report that the opposite is true and Russia’s presence will impede security for Israel. They say that the ”Russian military police” are in fact Chechen recruits in Russian uniforms. They have no legal status to be there as the presence of foreign forces is not covered in the 1974 Israel-Syrian disengagement agreement which created the buffer zone. Israel will see Russia as protecting Syria, Hezbollah and Iranian forces not helping them. God has brought Russia to the very border of Israel. We know one day Russia will enter Israel with a huge army. BIBLE QUOTE Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee. (Ezekiel 38:9)
Israel and Gulf square up to Tehran The Times, August 2, 2018 EVENT Israel has threatened to join forces with its former Arab foes to take on Iran in the Red Sea. Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, made the open threat of war in a time of increased tension across the Gulf as Iran prepares for the reintroduction of sanctions by the Trump administration on Monday. Mr Netanyahu said that no interruption to one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes could be tolerated. The Red Sea runs between the Bab al- Mandab strait at the southwestern tip of the Arabian peninsula and the Suez Canal. “If Iran tries to block the straits of Bab al-Mandab, it will find itself facing an international coalition . . . and this will include the State of Israel and all its arms,” he said on Wednesday. Mr Netanyahu did not mention Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by name, but both are part of a coalition of Arab states that is defending the recognised government of Yemen against the Houthi rebels. It is amazing to see Israel aligned to the Gulf Arab states. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are historic enemies of the Israeli state. Though they still do not recognise the country, they have found themselves geopolitically aligned with Israel. The old proverb says “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Israel is an enemy of Iran. Saudi Arabia’s enemy is Iran. Therefore (although highly improbable) Israel and Saudi Arabia (and Gulf states) have become geopolitical friends – with a common enemy - Iran. These relationships have become ever more prominent since President Trump took office and strengthened US relations with all three. This is exactly what God said would happen. Ezekiel 38 says there would be an alliance that supported Israel when Russia invaded. The alliance includes Britain, America, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States! COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? (Ezekiel 38:13)
US issues warning to Europe: End business with Iran or face harsh sanctions Washington Free Beacon, August 2, 2018 EVENT Congress and the Trump administration are issuing a stern warning to European partners: End all business ties with the Iranian regime or face harsh new sanctions in the coming months, a move that could impact international financial markets and U.S. banks tied to foreign monetary institutions, according to multiple senior U.S. officials who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon about diplomatic efforts to pressure Europe on Iran. The Trump administration and many in Congress have been working in tandem to pressure European partners over their ongoing financial ties to Iran ahead of efforts by the United States to fully reinstate harsh sanctions on Iran, including on its lucrative oil sector and banking systems, U.S. officials said. Key European partners have expressed opposition to the new U.S. sanctions in recent months and have held a series of meetings with senior Iranian officials to discuss tactics for evading the new American sanctions. COMMENT Senior U.S. officials leading the efforts to pressure European partners over their business ties with Iran said this week that the Trump administration will not hesitate to penalise those who violate the new sanctions. They warned that international banking institutions and even top U.S. banks could be hit with sanctions for not complying. Diplomatic tensions over the new sanctions have increased ahead of a November deadline. In November the Trump administration expects to fully reinstate sanctions on Iran that could cripple its business ties to Europe and further strain the regime's cash reserves. Iran is very much part of the final conflict over Israel as Persia (Iran) joins forces with Russia to invade Israel. These events are part of that coming story. BIBLE QUOTE Behold, I will stir up the Medes [Iranians] against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. This chapter has ancient AND latter day fulfilment… (Isaiah 13:17-18)
All-time heat records have been set all over the world this week Independent, July 21, 2018 EVENT Record high temperatures have been set across much of the world this week as an unusually prolonged and broad heatwave intensifies concerns about climate change. The past month has seen power shortages in California as record heat forced a surge of demand for air conditioners. Algeria has experienced the hottest temperature ever reliably registered in Africa. Britain, meanwhile, has experienced its third longest heatwave, melting the roof of a science building in Glasgow and exposing ancient hill forts in Wales. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said the rising temperatures were at odds with a global cyclical climate phenomenon known as La Niña, which is usually associated with cooling. “The first six months of the year have made it the hottest La Niña year to date on record,” said Clare Nullis of the WMO. COMMENT This year has been a terrible year for wildfires across the globe. And there doesn't appear to be an end in sight. Over the last several weeks, more than a dozen massive blazes have swept through Northern California, killing 41 people, destroying 6,000 homes and devastating the area's celebrated wine country. Authorities have called the disaster the deadliest and most destructive series of blazes in California history. Across the US, the government has spent more than $2.7 billion on firefighting in its just-finished budget year, a new record. In Portugal, a series of wildfires broke out on Sunday in the centre and north of the country, killing 41 and injuring another 71. Wildfires sweeping through a Greek resort town have killed at least 74 people. And so it goes on…The Bible says there will be fire & pillars of smoke before the day of the Lord comes – these fires are signs of that day… coming soon And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: BIBLE QUOTE (Acts 2:19-20)
