Origin of Asian Clam • The Asian Clam originally came from Southern Asia • Came to America in the 19th century
How Asian Clam’s came to America • The Asian Clam was first introduced to the San Francisco and Vancouver • Traveled to and through Oregon in the ballast water in ships and was also used as bait. .
The current situation • Current situation is bad • Asian Clam is on the 100 most dangerous invaders list • Inhabits a wide range of substrate types, temperature and salinity gradients and can reach population densities of more than 25,000/m2
Affect on the ecosystem • The introduction of the Asian Clam has caused clogging of water intake pipes. Affecting power, water , and fire protection industries that are using the intake pipes
Future complications • That the Asian Clams will out compete native Species such as native clams for space and food easily • If action is taken soon the Asian Clam will overpopulate and become a bigger problem than it already is.
Action Plan for Asian Clam • Amending the ballast water import health standard. • Increasing the chances of detecting the Asian Clam if it arrives by determining P. Amurensis unwanted and notifiable; and disseminating information on the Asian Clam to the public. • Increasing our under standing of the Asian Clam and how to respond to an incursion
