  2. A Conflict Resolution Program using the Dean and JoJo Anti-bullying DVD.

  3. Step 1: Preview DVD with students.

  4. Before the DVD • Explain that you will be watching a movie about one man’s relationship with a wild dolphin. • Ask the children to think about how this relationship is similar to friendship or bullying situations in their own lives.

  5. Step 2: Show DVD to class

  6. Step 3: Ask class comprehension questions.

  7. Comprehension Questions • JoJo does not like being touched or pestered. Have you ever been touched or pestered in a way you didn’t like? How did you react? • If someone is acting up and not paying attention to what they are doing, like the Jet skier, do people sometimes get hurt? • Have you ever seen someone on the playground going too fast or not paying attention to what they were doing and then someone got hurt? What did you think? • Have you ever stepped in to help a friend who was hurt, like Dean did when JoJo was hit by the Jet Ski? Tell about it. • How was Dean a friend to JoJo? • What can you do to help a hurt friend? • How do you help if a friend’s feelings are hurt? • Do you think Dean was worried about JoJo when he was hit by a jet ski? What do you think went through his mind? • Why would five big men jump on JoJo?

More Comprehension Questions • What would you do if you saw someone try to grab and wrestle a friend to the ground? • Have you ever seen someone jump on someone else and hurt them? • How many people think that JoJo was just defending himself when he fought the Brooklyn Boys? Attacking? • That night the Brooklyn Boys said they were attacked by a dolphin and many people agreed with them. Do bullies sometimes get away with their harassing behaviors? Is this fair? • How does JoJo say no to water skis hurting him? Is he using the only language he knows? • How do you say no to dangerous situations? • If you chose to bully, like Maria did, might somebody take revenge on you? • What other consequences are possible for bullying? • In what ways are your friendships the same as Dean and JoJo’s? How are they different? • When something wrong is happening to people or animals, how can people take action to change it peacefully?

  9. Step 3: Do Anti-bullying Activities.

  10. Suggested Classroom Activities: • A blank dolphin coloring page with spaces to write alternatives to bullying. (You are healing JoJo’s wounds with each peaceful choice.) • A Venn Diagram comparing how JoJo avoided bullies next to another Venn Diagram of a child avoided bullies. • A web of ideas to avoid bullying. • A web of how one is a true friend. • A dolphin mask with an accompanying worksheet. “This is what I see through JoJo’s eyes.” • A bully/victim mask to design. “This is what I see through the bully/victim’s eyes.” During the activity invite kids to hold the mask up to their faces and tell what the world looks like through the eyes of this person. “How does it feel to be______? What do you see around you? Why? Do you feel bad later?” • A Dean and JoJo play of one of the most poignant bullying situations and how they dealt with it positively. • Empowerment= Write a letter to a bully of the past. What would you like to say to him?

  11. Step 4: Make Peace Cards.

  12. How to Make Peace Cards • Explain the 3 types of conflict resolution: • a) Passive = Giving in to another. (lose, win) • b) Aggressive = Attacking another. (lose, lose) • c) Assertive = Be firm with desired outcome. (win, win) • Show students preprinted Peace Cards. • Example: “Use your words.”   • Pass out index cards and invite children to make their own positive choice for conflict resolution. • Once done they can either keep it as a reminder of good choices or add it to the class set. • Tell students that if they ever have a conflict with another child they can make a new card or share an existing one with him/her.

AMBASSADOR 1: Today we are going to show you a very special movie. AMBASSADOR 2: Yes, it’s the story of a man and dolphin and how they dealt with bullying. AMBASSADOR 3: But before we start there are few questions we’d like to ask you.

  15. Step 6: Send Dolphin Ambassadors to other classes and schools to teach conflict resolution.
