Moore’s Creek and Lodge Creek, Meadow Creek and Schenks Branch -----------------------------------------------Draft Sediment TMDL Report Update Gene Yagow Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering Dept. Technical Advisory Committee Meeting February 9, 2012 Charlottesville, VA
Basis for Impairment Moore’s Creek (MSC) Lodge Creek (XRC) Meadow Creek (MWC) Schenks Branch (SNK) Unnamed Trib (XSN) Biological Metrics Abundance Diversity Pollution tolerance SCI = Stream Condition Index
TMDL Components TMDL = ƩWLA + ƩLA + MOS + FG where TMDL = total maximum daily load; WLA = wasteload (permitted) allocations; LA = load (nonpoint) allocations; MOS = margin of safety; and FG = future growth allocation (1%).
Lodge Creek Sediment Loads and TMDL Existing and Reference Sediment Loads The Sediment TMDL (tons/yr)
Moore’s Creek* Sediment Loads and TMDL Existing and Reference Sediment Loads * Excludes Lodge Creek The Sediment TMDL (tons/yr)
Schenks Branch Sediment Loads and TMDL Existing and Reference Sediment Loads The Sediment TMDL (tons/yr)
Meadow Creek* Sediment Loads and TMDL Existing and Reference Sediment Loads * Excludes Schenks Branch The Sediment TMDL (tons/yr)
Alternate Allocation Scenarios #1: Incorporates statewide BMPs used in the Virginia WIP to achieve downstream TMDLs (% reductions calculated from results) • Baseline + BMPs = Allocation • % reduction = (baseline – Allocation)/baseline #2: Trial-and-error (% reductions changed first) • Baseline * % reduction = Allocation
Moore’s Creek* Sediment Load Allocation * Excludes Lodge Creek
Meadow Creek* Sediment Load Allocation * Excludes Schenks Branch
Next Steps • Conduct a final public meeting for the TMDL portion of the study • Setup work groups to transition to Implementation Planning • Account for progress already made in the watersheds
Progress Identified in 01/18/12 Call • Meadow Creek: • entire length natural channel design and restoration (Now – Dec 2012) • Sewer interceptor replacement near completion • Stream Restoration BMP credits being revised • Moore’s Creek: • 40-ac residential area being treated by constructed wetland (Fall 2012 – Spring 2013) • Ragged Mtn Dam mitigation plan includes a 4-ac wetland (soon) • Coordination with Moore’s Creek bacteria IP implementation through 319 funding • Coordination with Bay TMDL WIP
