Format • The arguments for each side can be downloaded from: http://www.nolligan.co.uk/MTI • If you cannot download them bring a USB Flash drive to the next lesson and you can copy them • If you do not have a computer I will print some copies.
Debating format: • A motion is proposed • two people support/oppose the motion • first speaker proposes the motion • the second opposes it • the 3rd speaker ‘seconds’ the motion and answer arguments raised by the ‘opposer’ • the 4th speaker answer the arguments raised by the proposer and seconder for the motion • the chairman opens the debate to ‘the floor’ – the audience then ask questions • one speaker from each side ‘sum’ up their arguments • voting
it is better to live in cities For Against • More people live in cities. • Modern man is too sophisticated for simple country pleasures. • It is enough to visit the countryside on weekends. • People easily adapt to city life; noise, traffic, etc. are hardly noticed. • Only a small minority of city-dwellers are involved in crime and violence. • There are better schools and services in big cities. • There is more opportunity to succeed in life. • Living standards are higher. • There is more choice of schools, shops and facilities • Large modern cities are too big and crowded • City life is unnatural, you lose touch with the land and nature. • The cost of living is higher in big cities. • Cities breed crime and violence; houses are often burgled; bicycles and motorcycles are stolen. • Pollution in big cities is dangerous to your health. Cities are noisy • City people are not as friendly as country people. • The country is a better place for children and much safer. • Children have too many distractions from their studies.
