Science FairMarch 2008 • The Eastern Iowa Science & Engineering Fair (EISEF) is held every March, allowing the mysteries of science to unfold with creativity and fact-finding investigations. Kids are able to exercise the procedures of the scientific process by proving their initial assumptions by providing valuable statistics, surveys and test results.
Flood Recovery: Hand-outsJune 2008 • Handed out goods at a “flood relief drive-thru”. Passed out shovels, Clorox, water, towels, toiletries, and general cleaning goods. • Donated Masks that were purchased by the chapter from Lowes.
Flood Recovery: DemolitionSeptember 2008 • Visited a Cedar Rapids home to take out everything destroyed from the flood so that it could be demolished and/or rebuilt.
Meet the GreeksSept 2008 & Jan 2009 • In an effort to begin revitalizing the undergraduate chapter at the University of Iowa, we participated in a Meet the Greeks session held by the NPHC
Clothe-A-ChildOctober 2008 • A local Masonic Lodge in Cedar Rapids held an annual event granting opportunity to help our inner-city youth. • Children who are less fortunate were brought to Sears to purchase clothes for the winter, guided by volunteers keeping track of the $120 budget they each have. • The entire budget was donated by Sears and Payless. This is our second year in participation.
DSQ’s Teen SummitDecember 2008 • The Delta Chapter and the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated held their 1st Annual Teen Summit in Iowa City, Iowa. • They invited many black high school students from the area to come out and gain a wealth of information on various teen topics from college, to financial management to STDs. The Greek presence played a significant role and the Basileus of the Eta Upsilon Chapter also participated and instilled the importance of mentorship and uplift in the minds of young men.
Toys-4-TotsDecember 2008 • The Salvation Army’s Annual Toys-4-Tots was held in January 2009 to help bring the giving spirit of Christmas to all families, especially those who suffered from the flood last summer. • After volunteering in the effort, The Eta Upsilon Chapter was interviewed LIVE by a local radio station via cell phone. The chapter also gave feedback to the administration, asking that they choose a better location for next year such as a toy store.
Black History Month 2009History of Stepping • Burlington High School held their Annual Black History Month Program. • The head of their Student Affairs, a brother from Eta Gamma Gamma, invited our chapter to educate the students on the history of stepping.
Black History Month 2009Poetry for Young People • Revisited an old Eta Upsilon/Mu Delta tradition, reading black literature to elementary school students. • Purchased a children’s book of poetry by Bro. Langston Hughes and donated it to the school after reading a few pieces.
Black History Month 2009Inspirational Poetry • Participated in Mt. Zion Baptist Church’s Black History Month by reciting a few inspirational poems. • This was the final initiative of our Black History Program, which took place on the last Sunday of February.
Hubbard GroupMarch 2009 • Sponsored the Hubbard Group’s Monthly Social for March 2009. • The group is a networking society that focuses on black male retention at the Univ. of Iowa.
