They are all literary terms. • Hint: The reader is able to see the thoughts of all characters in a story. • Hint: The moral of the story; the central message. • Hint: A series of related events that make up a short story. • Hint: The author's attitude toward the subject matter.
Bellwork 101, cont. • Hint: the central character of a story. • Hint: An object that represents something else. • Hint: The place and time of the story's action. • Hint: A comparison that does not use like or as. Ex.: Her eyes were jewels in a blue sky. • Hint: The perspective from which a story is told. • Hint: The turning point in a story; where the conflict reaches the most exciting point. • Hint: What actually happens is different from what the reader expected would happen. • Hint: The atmosphere or general feeling the reader has toward the story.
Bellwork 101, cont. • Hint: The story is told from the perspective of one of the characters using the personal pronoun, “I”. • Hint: A struggle between opposing forces; synonym to “problem.” • Hint: A comparison that uses like or as. Ex.: Her eyes were like jewels in a blue sky. • Hint: The end of the story, where the loose ends are tied up. • Hint: The character or force that opposes the protagonist and gives rise to the conflict of the story.

It is sometimes explicit but other times the reader needs to infer using clues from the title, character’s actions, and the plot. Recognizing the theme of a story helps the reader understand how the author thinks about the subject and his/her purpose for writing.

This can become a major hindrance on test performance and cause extreme nervousness and memory lapses among other symptoms. List four ways students can reduce their anxiety when taking a test.
How to Reduce Stress • Be confident • Sleep well • Relax (don’t think negative) • Have a good breakfast • Walk or exercise for a few days before the test • Listen to favorite music • Dress well & comfortably • Take a good shower the morning of the test • Review for the test several nights in advance • Breathe slowly • Read each item carefully • Read the instructions • Don’t rush through the test • Don’t mind people that have finished before you • Skip hard questions and refer to them later • Read all short & extended response questions before reading the articles
