A PERPENDICULAR BISECTOR is a line that bisects (cuts in half) another line and it is at right angles to the line. B A Mid-point of AB We can find the equation of a perpendicular bisector if we know the coordinates of the points A and B.
Example 1 Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AB given the coordinates A(2,-3) and B(7,-5). We need the mid-point of AB. B (7,-5) We need the gradient of AB. M A(2,-3)
Exercise • 1) Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of P(9,5) and Q(-1,3). • 2) Given that the triangle QRS have vertices (-3,1), (-4,-2) and (7,0). • Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of RS. • Triangle ABC has vertices A(-1,6), • B(-3,-2) and C(5,2). • Find • a) the equation of the line p, • the median from C of the • triangle ABC. • b) the equation of the line q, • the perpendicular bisector • of BC. • c) the coordinates of the point • of intersection of the lines p • and q.
