  1. Notebook Computers Written by Tim Keyser Georgia CTAE Resource Network 2010

  2. Notebooks The term “notebook” can be used interchangeably with the term “laptop”. Notebooks are similar to desktop computers in function, but they are far more portable.

  3. Heat • One consequence of being compact in design is the inability of a notebook to easily dissipate heat. • High temperatures cause electronic components to wear out faster than those which maintain lower temperatures. • These factors influence the overall performance of notebooks since they generally use less powerful components to minimize heat.

  4. Convenience • Notebook computers can perform virtually all of the functions of desktop computers which makes them very popular among people who travel or need access to a computer in multiple locations.

  5. Cost • Notebook computers vary greatly in cost. There are several factors that affect the cost of a notebook, but they are generally related to the size and type of display (screen) and other performance factors. • Performance factors include items such as CPU type and speed, the amount of RAM (installed and capacity), and the onboard video chip.

  6. Expansion Ports • Expansion ports are common on notebooks. • They allow the use to add external devices.

  7. Understanding • Be sure to familiarize yourself with different styles of notebook computers and the features that affect their cost. • Reading reviews of products is an excellent method of researching before making purchasing decisions.
