  1. Writing Reflection Metamorphosis Unit Test: In-Class Timed Essay

  2. 1. Put a  next to your thesis. We (humans) want what we don’t have, & a basic want that every one has is to be successful. So transformation is a thing that most people dream of. Magically waking up as someone or something new & going off on an adventure is a theme that is very popular. But the want to be thrust into danger & the unknown should be a scary thing. So why is it something we dream of.

  3. 1. Put a  next to your thesis.

  4. 1. Is your thesis L2? Lots of people, like Gregor and Io, don’t realize how people and things see the world in a different way until they see it for themselves.

  5. 1. Is your thesis L2?

  6. 1. Is your thesis L2? Humans have always been fascinated with the notion of change because it lets them change into something better or something they have always wanted to be, and it can symbolize what the world is like but in a twisted way.

  7. 1. Is your thesis L2?

  8. 2. Is your thesis the last sentence in your intro? Even though everyone is fascinated with the idea of change, it isn’t always accepted in everyday life. Examples are found in Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Ovid’s “Metamorphoses.” Gregor, in the Metamorphosis, turns into a massive vermin and is rejected by his family. Daphne, from “Apollo and Daphne,” turns into a tree to avoid Apollo, who has been change to love her.

  9. 2. Is your thesis the last sentence in your intro?

  10. 3. Do you address both parts of the prompt? In Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Gregor had changed into a bug. In history he represented the industrial revolution. His family represented the people who did not want the change. This shows that change needed to happen but a lot of people were scared of it like when Gregor’s family was scared of him being a bug. When Gregor died his family was very happy about it. In history this was a representation of when the Industrial Revolution ended. Like his family a lot of people were ready for it to be over.

  13. 4. Does L2 (blue) outweigh L1 (green)? Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” and Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” show the what if scenario in their book/books. In Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” he tells the story of a young man named Gregor who undergoes a mysterious transformation waking up one morning. Gregor tries multiple times to try and give the family signs that he has transformed into a bug but each time he does he scares everyone, and runs back into his room or gets beaten back into the room. Even when members of his family know it’s him they still alienate him showing that transformations can be a tragedy. The family no longer treats him like a son anymore they treat him like a vermin or a burden they have to live with.

  16. 5. Do you avoid L3 in your body ¶s? Another idea why people are so fascinated is because some people are just plain out scared of change. Many people are afraid of what they might become physically and mentally. When you’re a kid you think your life will go perfectly as planned but not much later, stand in front of a mirror asking yourself, “What have I become?” Another reason is because they don’t want to be something they don’t want to be. For example, in Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Gregor transformed into a bug. That was not something planned nor something he wanted. Last, people doubt the thing they will become. They’ve hoped for so much only to get something they didn’t deserve. Like when [Daphne] turned into a tree because Apollo was chasing her.

  22. 8. Do you prove your thesis? (In other words, do you address every partof your thesis in your essay?)

  23. 9. Do you avoid “walking the fence”? Based off of the examples listed in this essay, it is clear that the theme of change and transformation briefly seen in both Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Kafka’s The Metamorphosis is an intriguing topic that equally possesses both many pros and many cons.

In another story by Ovid Appollo is chasing after Daphne. Daphne is turned into a tree. She is saved from Apollo because he cannot move a tree. In the book Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka the main character GregorSamsa wakes up suddenly and is terrified to find out that he is indeed a bug. There is no explanation as to why he is a bug. All of these stories demonstrate how unpredictable change is. No one can foresee change.

  30. 13. Does everything in your 2nd¶ relate to your 2nd topic sentence? To start off, change deeply affects Pygmalion and Galatea for the better.

In that time period everyone had to be aware of change because it was happening everywhere. They had acquired trains and new machines requiring human maintenance as little. GregorSamsa was a traveling salesman of his time before he was transformed into a bug. The author could be showing an interest of change towards the movement that had been happening.

  47. Is your shrunken essay smooth and cohesive? The captivation that humans have had with change, can be traced back to the irrefutable fact that when change does occur, consequences, whether good or bad, are put into place. On one hand, change can be a glorious occurrence that brings about better times in the future. On the other hand, change can be an unfortunate event that few await in anticipation. Change can not only affect a person’s counter moves, it can alter humans’ perception of the world in which they live in. Change, good or bad, has always been, and will always be, a terrifying, yet remarkable event.
