IN-LINE MARATHONS In-line marathons are a hot fitness trend gaining media coverage, fans and new participants in historic proportions. In-line skating is one of America's most popular sports with more than 20 million participants. Today more skaters are pushing the sport and their own physical abilities into new territory through 26.2-mile race events organized in destination cities and resorts across North America .Marathons have grown to attract skaters of all abilities who enjoy the thrill of training and the rush of skating at speeds up to 35 mph with thousands of new friends.
WHO SKATES MARATHONS People from all walks of life skate marathons, from 10 years to 80 years of age. Sure there are world class speedsters at the front of the pack but 90% of the participants are your neighbors, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends who do it for companionship and competition alike. Athletes from other sports are crossing by the dozens from sports such as cycling, running, and XC skiing to try marathon skating. Runners like it because it’s not as jarring on the joints while skiers tend to use it as a great way to cross train. Meanwhile cyclists enjoy the pack-like similarities to riding on the road. Because this is a relatively new pursuit, first time marathoners are hitting the road more than ever. For most, this will be their first in-line marathon.
TRAINING FOR AN IN-LINE MARATHON Running 26.2 miles is a physically daunting task that takes months of strict training before the first race. In-line marathons on the other-hand are an achievable challenge for skaters at all fitness levels. Compared to running, it takes about half the time to train, complete and recover from an in-line marathon, yet the sport still offers a rigorous workout and is faster, easier on the body and - for most - more fun. World class skaters do a marathon in just over an hour; intermediate fitness skaters usually finish the 26.2 course in 2 hours. Recreational minded skaters finish in about 2.5 hours.
A FUN KIND OF FITNESS • The success of any fitness routine is based on the ability and desire to carry it out. In-line marathons provide the formula for long-term fitness success. Training, which can be done on just about any paved surface, is challenging but requires a very reasonable amount of time investment. Skating 3 to 5 times a week, for an hour is a good standard to follow and will get you in shape to skate a marathon. In-line skating is enjoyed equally among men women, young people and adults, so marathon training and skating can be done with friends and family. The goal of skating a marathon is achievable and can be done repeatedly without over taxing the body. Getting out in the fresh air and floating along the pavement relieves stress and feels great. And above all, it’s just plain fun. In particular, in-line skating: • Produces higher muscular activity levels for hips, thighs, the buttocks and shins than running or cycling. • Works leg muscles for longer periods of time than running strides or cycling cranks. • Provides equivalent aerobic benefits as running. • Produces less than half the shock to joints as running. • Burns 570 calories per hour - as much as running and cycling. • Leads to relaxation, increased energy levels, weight control, lower blood pressure and reduced risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease.
GETTING STARTED In-line skating is a relatively easy sport to learn and in-line marathons are an achievable goal for all levels of skaters. If you’re new to the sport or new to marathoning, the International In-line Skating Association (IISA) recommends taking lessons. By registering for the marathon, Wolverine In-line and Ice Speedskating Teams will provide training tips for you as well. GETTING THE GEAR Good equipment can make a big difference in the enjoyment of your first marathon experience. Today’s skates and accessories are more comfortable and perform significantly better than models produced in the early 1990s. Upgrade your equipment to a level that will provide long-lasting comfort for hours on the road. Try on several pairs before making a purchase decision. Experienced skaters should consider upgrading to a four-wheel skate with a longer frame or even a five-wheel skate to help increase speed. If you already own quality in-line skates, upgrade the wheels and bearings prior to your first marathon training sessions. Spend time on your skates so they have time and mold to your feet. The time you spend to break in the skates and train for the marathon will pay off in a rewarding marathon experience and a fitter you. You will need a helmet for this event.
