Reducing “RISK” of Internet Use • Guide students on the Internet • keep them on track • task orientated. • Critically EVALUATE all sites prior to educational use. • If the students are going to search, consider: • Teaching them HOW to search • Using a Kid Friendly Search Engine • ALWAYS supervise students using the WWW!

  4. Recommended Search Engines • Google • Yahoo • Lycos • AltaVista • Dogpile (meta search engine) • Mamma (meta search engine)

  8. General Searching Tips for Teachers: • Think about ALL of the different words to describe your topic. (ex. Technology Resource Center) • Use as many keywords as possible. • Watch for mispelled words!  • If you are unsuccessful with one search engine, try using a metasearch engine. • Become familiar with one search engine---and read its list of suggestions!

Is something being sold? • Background of the Person or Organization • Age of the Site: • How current is the information? Updated? • Overall Relevant Content • Design and Stability: • Is the site easy to navigate? Is it a personal site? Ads?

  11. Site Evaluation Practice • Divide into pairs. • Locate the 2 sites designated for your group. • Navigate and Explore the site. • Use the rubric to evaluate the sites. (1 site per rubric) • Present your findings to the class.
