What are metamaterials? Applications Manmade periodic structures… • blocking, focusing or dispersing sound, light, radiation • increase electrical conductivity and decrease thermal conductivity • insulation • manipulate layer thickness to reflect different colors …with extraordinary properties
Conservation of energy is a one of the biggest problems facing society today. • The periodicity of metamaterials make for great photonic crystals, thus making them excellent insulators. • Reflection of light for a metamaterial is a property derived from the structure of the material rather than just the materials intrinsic properties, thus allowing them to selectively reflect incoming wavelengths of light based on processing techniques.
Most heat from incoming light is carried by waves in the UV spectrum • We plan to create a metamaterial that will reflect nearly all incoming light in the UV and IR wave spectrum yet let visible light through thus creating a super insulating transparent material.
Cast Roof Light • Current insulators tend to absorb incoming waves in order to stop their propagations, trapping heat within the material • With our metamaterial we will be able to reflect a greater majority of the light thus improving the efficiency of this insulator
