Computer Graphics Presentation Professor Bill White from the Department of Computer Science will present material from the SIGGRAPH 2009 conference that he attended in New Orleans in August, including award-winning computer animations, the latest in technological advances in graphics and gaming, and tips on careers in these areas. Animation Introduction “Jump” German pop group Ben*Jammin learns some powerful jumping skills. No shot planning, tracking markers, blue screens, or any other preparations for the CG shots. After shooting the video, the CG shots were selected from a large amount of raw footage, and 3D models were created to match still images of the footage with camera mapping. Tools used: 3ds Max, Syntheyes, After Effects, Photoshop “Reach” Australian student film produced after work over an 8-month period. Tools used: Windows XP, Maya, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, all on one dual-core desktop computer.

Day One: CG Jobs Panel: Getting a Job in CG for Entertainment: Visual Effects, Animation, and Games • Internship – demonstrates a passion for the field, do research on company before applying/interviewing • Demo Reel/Portfolio – show your best work; less than 3 minutes long; first 15 seconds most important • Generalist/Specialist – generalists are good, but you’re applying for a specific job; position-specific demo • Photorealism – demo reels should emphasize walking, facial expressions, trees – not dragons, spaceships • Résumé – clear/succinct/specific up-front summary, including software/OS experience • Network – companies accept on-line applications, SIGGRAPH job fair (depends on timing), user groups Panel: Keeping a Job in CG for Entertainment: Visual Effects, Animation, and Games • Indispensability – Keep your skills updated, show initiative, play well with others • Accomplishments – take credit for yours, share credit for team’s, give it for others’ • Honesty – communicate good and bad news to management, don’t overextend yourself • Positivity – do your job without griping, take a day to develop ideas instead of saying no • Reliability – standard work must be done quickly so dazzling improvements get needed time Computer Animation Festival!!!
