3V-CPI Characteristics • Combines CPI and 2D-S probes, which doubles as the particle detection system for the CPI imaging camera. • 2D-S reduces uncertainties in CPI size distribution. Can use wind speed measurements from SPL annemometer or 2D-S particle transit time measurements. • Identification of water drops and ice crystals is done using CPI imagery. 2D-S measurements are then used to quantitatively determine water and ice size distributions. • Software development to produce separate water and ice size distributions is under development (currently not in existence).
Following Example Shows how CPI (and 3V-CPI) Images can be used Qualitatively to Identify Regions of Water, Mixed-Phase and Ice Regions of Cloud

Data Processing Scheme • CPI Images will be placed in the archive shortly following the close of StormVex. • The Water/Mixed/Ice time series product will follow. • Algorithm to Detect Riming CPI Images may be Possible • 2D-S data will take longer yet to process. • Combined CPI/2D-S Data Products will be Available sometime within a year following the close of StormVex.
