Olympic Games Souvenir Packaging Graphics Project
L/O: Showing understanding of how to analyse the design brief: All must (E): Give clear descriptions. Most should (C): Include technical language. Some could (A): Write using fluent commentary. Design Brief: The situation: In 2016 Rio de Janeiro in Brazil will host the Summer Olympic Games. In order for this event to be successful different types of promotional material will be marketed before and during the games. Your task: Design and make the packaging and promotional material for a commemorative product (a souvenir) with a Rio 2016 theme.
1.Souvenirs: 5.Imagery: 6.Promotional Materials: • Mugs/cups • Key ring fobs • Stick-on transfers • Hats/caps • Fridge magnets • Pens/pencils • Rulers • Erasers • T-shirts • Bags/ruck sacks • Posters • Sporting activities • National colours • Brazil/Rio landmarks • Posters - billboards • Leaflets • Flags • Advertisements 4.Identity: Analysis of Design Brief • Lettering • Logos • Trademarks • Symbols • Pictorial drawings 3.Packaging Materials: 2.Types of packaging: • Card – e.g. corrugated/fluted, • Whiteboard/greyboard • Plastics: • Acetate/PVC • Polythene • Expanded Polystyrene • Vegetable protein board • Boxes/cartons • Bags • Packets • Blister packs • Bubble wrap
Souvenir Research • Annotate your chosen images by commenting on the following things: • what is the function of the product (what is meant to do). • it’s appearance: shape, colour, texture. • what material(s) you think it is made from. • what you think of the graphics that appear on it – are they attractive, are they suitable?
Packaging Research • Annotate your chosen images by commenting on the following things: • How does the packaging work – how does it contain/protect the product inside it? • What materials do you think it is made from? • What impact would they have on the environment – could they be recycled easily? • What do you think of the graphics that appear on it – are they attractive, are they suitable, would they appeal to consumers?
L/O: Showing understanding of how to analyse promotional product packaging: All must: Give clear descriptions. Most should: Use technical language. Some could: Talk using fluent commentary. • Product Packaging Analysis: • In groups analyse an actual souvenir product and its packaging. • Write down your answers to the following questions on the sheet provided: • What product are you looking at? • Describe the type of packaging – is it a box/carton, bag, wrapper, etc.? • How is it opened/closed? • How well does the product fit inside the packaging – is it a snug fit? • What sort of materials do you think were used to make the packaging – cardboard, polythene, acetate, etc? • Describe the colours and styles of lettering on the packaging – are they appropriate? • What information is given on the packaging? • Are there any difficulties users might have? • What could be changed to improve the packaging? • Can the packaging be part of a sustainable world – i.e. can it be made from recycled and recyclable materials? England Mug. Box. Tuck-in lid and ‘automatic base’. It fits well. Corrugated cardboard. Colours reflect the national flag. Sans serif text is easy to read. Washing instructions. It may come apart. It could have some more obvious football related imagery. Cardboard is easily made from recycled fibres and can be recycled again afterwards. This helps reduce impact on the environment.
Product Packaging Analysis: L/O: Showing understanding of how to analyse promotional product packaging: All must: Give clear descriptions. Most should: Use technical language. Some could: Talk using fluent commentary. Starter: Key words wordsearch – discuss terminology/meanings. Link to objective. Main: Analyse three examples – working in pairs. Rotate products every five minutes. Plenary: Summarise findings – each group to nominate a speaker to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of an analysed example. Why is analysing existing product packaging helpful when developing your own design ideas?
Packaging Disassembly Hologram sticker to prove product is genuine/authentic The packaging is made of corrugated cardboard, with an outer layer of colour printed paper (varnished/laminated) This is a cut-out window that allows consumers to see the mug inside the box. Barcode Product description England branding Product information (care instructions) These three flaps tuck in to make a ‘crash lock’/’automatic base’ that does not require glue.
L/O: Show understanding of the purpose of market research. All must (E): produce a set of basic questions that help identify demands. Most should (C): relate questions to the design of graphic products. Some could (A): collect data and visually represent outcomes using charts. Title: Survey on Attitudes to Souvenirs & Their Packaging: Task: Write a ‘closed’ questionnaire with at least six questions on people’s opinions. A closed question has a fixed number of possible answers. For example: 1. Do you ever buy souvenirs? • Use MS Word to create your questionnaire. • Draw tables so you can tick multiple-choice answers using a tally system. • Do not print off multiple copies to give out individually – this is an unnecessary waste of paper! 2. Would you want to keep packaging for a souvenir product? 3. Is the appearance of souvenir packaging important to you?
Analysing survey results using pie charts: • Open a new spreadsheet in Excel (Start > All Programs > MS Office 2010) • Type your first question in the A/2 cell • Type your multiple choice answers in the B/1, C1, D1, etc. cells • Enter the number of answers for each question in the B/2, C/2, D/2, etc. cells • Highlight all the rows and columns you used for your data. • Click the Insert tab button. • Choose the Pie Chart option. • The pie chart will be inserted on to your spreadsheet. • Copy and paste the pie chart into an A3 landscape formatted page in MS Word. • Repeat this process for your other questions. • When finished Save As… to your own user space.
L/O: Show understanding of designing and making considerations. All must (E): produce basic summaries of the different issues to consider. Most should (C): illustrate and describe examples to support statements. Some could (A): elaborate further with detailed case studies. • Health & Safety: • How H&S is Strictly regulated by law – through HSE (Health & Safety Executive). • Handling sharp equipment with care – i.e. scalpel (knife) with metal safety ruler. • Using spraymount (aerosol glue) in a well ventilated area. Being aware of it being flammable and irritant. • Being aware of others working around you – not leaving things in the way. • Wearing suitable clothing. • Social Issues: • Could the product be offensive to someone? Does it insult someone? • Are there any religious, racial, or gender-related issues? • Have offensive symbols been used? • Is the any nudity, violence? • Could the words be offensive? • Could the images be offensive? • Are the manufacturing working conditions harmful to anyone? • Environmental Issues: • Using materials that can easily be recycled or are degradeable (rot easily) helps to preserve natural resources. • Fossil fuels that are burnt to produce energy (to operate machinery) cause pollution of the atmosphere. • The ‘Green’ alternative is to use ‘renewable’ energy sources i.e. solar and wind. Designing & Making Considerations: • Industrial Design Practices: • Creating/testing models/prototypes. • Seeing how well they stand up to use. • Developing designs using CAD (computer aided design) – 2D Design, Adobe Photoshop software. • Printing artwork on EODs (electronic output devices) e.g. sublimation printer. • Using CAM (computer aided manufacturing) – e.g. lasercutter.
Client Profile* • *A client profile provides more detail about your target consumer. • Specify the following points: • Gender. • Age group. • Income bracket (roughly how much they earn). • Nationality. • Attitude towards sporting events. • How much they value/appreciate commemorative items/souvenirs. • Write how the above points influence your ideas regarding the design of your packaging and promotional materials for the Glasgow 2014 mug.
