The Mongol Empire * After uniting the Mongols Genghis Khan began foreign conquest. * By 1215 they had conquered most of northern China. * They divided it into four parts called khannates. * By 1227 they controlled a territory stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. The Yuan Dynasty * In 1260 Kublia Khan created a new dynasty named the Yuan which means the "origin or beginning." * He kept the bureaucracy and the rituals of the Chinese court. * But he reduced the power of scholar-officials and suspended the civil service exam.
