Critical Thinking Objectives: • Defining Critical Thinking Skills. • Why is there a need to learn? • Learning to use basic Critical Thinking Skills. • Practicing with your new tools for critical thinking.
Critical Thinking Definition • A way of deciding whether a claim is always true, sometimes true partly true, or just false.
Critical Thinking Definition Information Seeking Searching for evidence, facts, or knowledge by identifying relevant sources and gathering objective, subjective, historical, and current data from those sources.
Critical Thinking • Is a social activity that takes continuous improvement and caring enough to offer alternatives. • Looking for the best reasoning regardless of what others are doing or saying.
Critical Thinking A process of applying concepts: • Questions & Evaluation. • Reflective statistics • Observation.
Why is there a need? • CRCST, CSBPD, CIS, CHL Certifications dictates a higher level of performance. • Many businesses especially healthcare are moving toward a Management Free culture.
Why ? • Imagine a World without Managers There are thoughts around the idea, “too many cooks in the kitchen”. “too many managers can be a financial drain on a business.

Learning the Process • Begins with looking for the best reasoning regardless of what others are doing.
Learning the Process • Are there any fallacies in the information? • How good is the evidence? • Are the statistics incomplete or no statistics? • Has any information been omitted?

Practice Session Nurse “No Trust” • Calls at 3:45pm “Nobody delivered our instruments today!” “We have 8 Pod cases tomorrow and nothing to work with”! • Tech “Not my Problem” Responda “they’ve gone home for the day” Hangs up the phone.
Practice Session • Nurse “Frustrated” Setting up the Back Table in OR 5. Opens the Cystoscope Set and finds light cord and no scope. Calls Sterile Processing.
Practice Session Tech “Too Busy” answers • Yeah? “why don’t you get another one off the shelf”? “I’m too busy to look for another set”!
Practice Session Tech “Self Absorbed” Hears the Sterilizer Alarming, goes and hits the stop button. Reads the digital screen that says “Door Locked” .
Practice Session Tech “Self Absorbed” • Tries to open the door unsuccessful looks at the time. Goes to lunch!
Practice Session Tech “Nobody told me” • Finishes wrapping light handles and sees that there is a problem with sterilizer number 5

Critical Thinking Summary This process should never be put away, it should always be in useto assist with continued growth and improvement.
Critical Thinking Summary Using a Series of Questions we must think backwards from what our ultimate goal is, and continually ask questions that bring us back to the point where the issue sparked asking the questions why ?
