ESS Mission The primary mission of the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Office is to provide a centralized focus for the coordination and promotion of the University’s vision, values, and direction for environmental stewardship through collaborative faculty, student, and staff efforts. The Office also provides support to the UW Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee (ESAC).

Greater UW Roles • Facilities Services (Power Plant, Utilities, Transportation, Recycling) • Capital Projects Office (Building Construction/Remodeling) • Housing and Food Services • UW Bothell, UW Tacoma, Medical Centers • Purchasing • Treasury • Planning & Budgeting/Capital Resource Planning • Environmental Health and Safety • Green Teams

  7. Role Opportunities • Vast reach – touches all parts of the UW and beyond • Working with students, faculty and staff and more • People care and want to do this work • Education for behavior change • Telling the story – metrics and experiences

  8. Role Challenges • Can’t (and don’t) know all that’s happening • Novice understanding of science/technical parts • Politics • Funding – for projects, for staff • Add on assignment • Can’t tackle all that needs to be done….

To Be Effective • Place role/office in central administration • Assure executive level support and place “at the table” • Understand the (changing) politics • Know and develop relationships with key decision makers/players • Know how to tell the story • Be proactive • Take on assignments no one else will
