  1. Welcome back! • Hand in your epidemic assignments at the front table beside me. No HW= Lunch DT today • Grab your book • Title : Metal Timeline Gameplan -Demo

  2. Metals and their history

  3. Starter - What is a metal? hard, gas, shiny, porous, ductile, conducts electricity, insulator, brittle, malleable, weak, soluble (dissolves) can be hammered into shape, soluble. From this list can you pick out properties of metals?

  4. Objective All State why metals are useful Complete timeline for metal history Most Describe the properties and uses of metals in history State the different ways metals are found Link the property of the metal to its use Some Explain some metals were discovered later Explain why some are extracted and some are found

  5. What is an ore? • Look at the examples of metal ores that you have on the tables. • Can you match the metal ore to the following: • Copper • Iron • Lead • Tin

  6. Challenge question • Why do you think some of these substances look nothing like a metal? • These substances are compounds with other elements and do not have the same properties as the metal element.

  7. An economic argument? • It costs a lot of money to extract metals from the compounds they are found in. Why is it worth it? • In your book write a list of all the things that we use metals for.

  8. Obtaining ores • How do we get the ores out of the ground?

  9. Gold panning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bzkRLrvKRI

  10. Obtaining lead from its ore Due to its position on the reactivity series it is possible to obtain lead from its ore using carbon. This process is called REDUCTION. We are going to do this practically today.

  11. Hazards and safety • Can you and your partner come up with three things that are important for safety when conducting a practical? • Today’s practical involves high temperatures and toxic materials. • Pupils deliberately behaving inappropriately will be removed from the classroom for their own safety.

  12. Experimental Set-up Metal ore

  13. Notes to copy and complete Unreactive metals such as ______ are found in the Earth as the _______ itself. Most metals are found as ___________ that require chemical reactions to _______ the metal. [Gold, compounds, metal, extract]

  14. Metal timeline • Use the information sheets to make a timeline for the discovery of metals Questions • What would today be like if we only had the metals in your timeline? • What do we have now that they didn’t have in the past?
