Why do generic medicines not work the same? medbuzz.in/blogs/why-do-generic-medicines-not-work-the-same Introduction India is one of the largest producers of generic medicines in the market. It is a global market leader in exporting generic medicines to the US, Japan, and countries in Africa and Europe. Generic medicines have the same ingredients and composition as branded medicines. They are the same in quality, characteristics, and effectiveness. They have the same dosage, use, effects, side effects, and strength as the branded ones. But are available under the chemical name, which is not known to the public. Branded medicines are quite expensive and increase the cost of the healthcare sector. Therefore, governments are trying to popularise the use of generic medicines among people. The doctors are also advised to prescribe generic medicines to the patients. Reasons for the non-popularity of generic medicines in India Though generic medicines have many benefits and advantages attached to it, people still feel hesitant to use the generic version in place of the branded ones. There is a notion among Indians that they get swayed by brands and consider them better because of the brand name attached to it, whether in clothing, cosmetics, accessories, or grocery. The same applies to the pharmaceutical market. People prefer medicines that have popular brand names as they consider them to be safe and more genuine. Although these generic medicines in India are FDA approved and go through a vigorous research and development process, and are low on the pocket, people still cannot believe in the generic medicines in India as a substitute for branded ones. This may be because of many reasons- 1/3
1. One of the reasons is that the generic medicine doesn’t have to go through the tedious process of approvals, which the original or branded medicines have to go through. The generic medicines in India have the same ingredients and the same amount, but it does not specify anything about the pill’s fillers. That is where the difference sets in. The absorption capacity and how it affects one’s body can be different in both cases. 2. Taking an over the counter medicine for a headache or minor fever can be okay and can work well for you. But for problems or diseases that are major like a seizure, cancer, heart disease, etc., will require medications prescribed by the doctors and have the same ingredients and composition as needed. Opting for a generic substitute, in this case, can be harmful to your health. Therefore, generic medicines don’t work in case of significant health issues. 3. The notion that generic medicines in India are cheaper and less expensive than their branded counterparts might not always be very accurate. There is stiff competition in the market among the manufacturers, which shoots up these medicines’ prices. Also, there will be only one manufacturer of a particular generic medicine in the market. They will charge whatever price they wish to because they have a monopoly in the market. 4. Most of the generic medicines in India are not covered under medical insurance. If the cost of generic medicine in India is comparatively higher, it is better to switch to a branded version covered under the insurance policy. 5. Another reason could be a lack of awareness among people. People are of the notion that the medicines are cheaper means they are of inferior quality. The medicines prescribed by doctors are also branded ones, and they do not prescribe the generic version of it. 6. The government has taken many initiatives and steps like setting up Jan Aushadhi stores and making it compulsory for doctors to prescribe mostly generic medicines in India, but it has failed. The department of pharmaceuticals has not done the proper implementation of these schemes. They have not done effective promotions of the generic medicines in India and their benefits. All these things have made the use of generic medicines not so popular in India. 7. The support of the hospitals and physicians is also what is lacking. They usually prescribe medicines that give them a commission, and so they opt for branded medicines as the generic ones have lower profit margins. Conclusion Generic medicines have become quite popular in recent years, but people are still skeptical about the generic version’s safety and efficacy. All these reasons have made people a little hesitant in opting for the generic versions in place of the branded ones. But people are becoming more aware of the benefits of generic medicines in India, and doctors are also recommending the generic versions, so the use of these medicines can be thought of soon. Still, they cannot wholly replace the branded medicines. At Medbuzz, we are an online generic medicine website and generic medicine app that 2/3
