Results of Question #1 (What Issues Have Impacted Business Education?) External influences • Birth of Microcomputer • Change in office culture • Typewriting, shorthand, variety of office machines no longer needed • Software replaced many clerical functions; hardware replaced filing cabinets • Change in Societal Attitudes • Vocational education is out • Everyone must go to college • Emphasis on academic subjects in high schools • Changing Role of Women • Historically – business teacher or secretary • Today - careers once reserved for men now available to women
Results of Question #2 (How Have Business Education Programs Responded?) • Downsizing, elimination, & reorganization • Changes in curriculum • No more typewriting, shorthand, & office machines • Replaced with microcomputer & its keyboard • SIU-C • Very small traditional student population • Alternative certification program • Carbondale • Chicago • ISU • Traditional student population • Second bachelor degree students
Results of Question #3 (What Will Future Hold?) • Business Education does have a future! • Microcomputer technology here to stay • Finding qualified faculty to staff BTE programs will be a challenge • Must partner with academic disciplines to become part of core mission of schools • Quote from one study participant “In fact if my daughter, who is a college freshman, said that she wanted to become a business teacher, I would say ‘Good!’”.
Current Research • Working on quantitative study w/Glenn Bailey • Determining how business educators are using technology in schools • Learning the types of technology which are available as teaching or administrative tools • Online survey • Sent out two times; sent out again this week to those who have not previously responded • Preparing to submit presentation proposal to national business education organization
