  1. Researching into film roles

  2. Director • Directors are the creative leads of the film. They hold the creative vision throughout the whole process, from pre-production through to the final edit. • Directors start with a script, and work with a screenwriter and sometimes a script editing team. It’s not uncommon for the director to be the screenwriter as well. • a director will also be instructing other members of the crew, especially lighting, wardrobe and make-up supervisors. Directors work to get the best performance out of the actors but also need to ensure that all technical aspects are in place to get a great scene filmed.

  3. Kathryn Bigelow • Kathryn Bigelow is an American film director and screenwriter, noted for action films that often featured protagonists struggling with inner conflict. • She was the first woman to win an Academy Award for best director for The Hurt Locker (2008). • Oscar winner 2010 – Best motion picture of the year

  4. Camera operator • Camera operators are responsible for capturing the action. They shoot what’s happening, whether that’s on location for a news programme or documentary or a large multi-camera studio show or a major outside broadcast. They know which cameras to use in which conditions and consider the composition, framing and movement of a shot. • When shooting on location, such as on documentaries, they might be the only camera operator working in all kinds of conditions; underwater, in a snowstorm or in a desert. They often operate a variety of different cameras, including handheld, cameras mounted on a body frame (Steadicam) or a drone. • They are responsible for taking care of the kit, wherever they are shooting, and often own their equipment. Camera operators are often skilled at lighting and for that reason are sometimes known as lighting camera operators.

  5. Phillip Bloom • He has worked as a cameraman for Lucasfilm, CNN, Sky News and the BBC. • Independent projects are key to Philip and he splits his time between bigger projects and small independent ones. • One of his most successful independent projects was “How To Start A Revolution” which won a BAFTA in 2012 • He has become very well known for his in-depth video reviews of various cameras, which have helped many people in the huge decision of buying a camera. His YouTube channel now has over 200,000 subscribers.

  6. Editor • In pre-production, editors work closely with the director to decide how to make the most of the script. • By the time the film wraps editors will have spent hours reworking scenes and cutting them together to create a rough assembly. • During post-production, the editor and director will work closely to refine the assembly edit into a director’s cut, which must be approved by producers, until they achieve picture lock (known as final cut).  After that, the music and sound are added to the mix, a process that editors will oversee.

  7. Thelma Schoonmaker • Thelma Colbert Schoonmaker is an American film editor, known for her over fifty years of work with director Martin Scorsese.  • She has been nominated for six Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Film Editing, and out of the six, she won three Academy Awards. • She is largely known for her work including Raging Bull, The Aviator, The Irishman, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street. • She became the second-most-nominated editor in Academy Awards history.

  8. Art director / DOP • Art directors are responsible for the visual style of the animation. They decide how the characters, props and environments are going to look and provide a basis for the rest of the art department to work from. • Art directors start by examining the script and working with the director to understand the vision for the film or TV programme. They then create their designs and determine the tone, mood and colour palettes.

  9. Gary Thomkins • He is known for his work on Rogue One (2016), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) • Art director Gary Tomkins has received the British Film Designers Guild’s Outstanding Contribution to the Art Department award in recognition of his career. • He has given viewers unforgettable visual experiences in some of the most significant and successful blockbusters.

  10. Producer • Producers are at the financial, practical and creative heart of a film or TV drama. They are often the first to get involved, spotting the creative opportunity and commercial viability of a production. They continue as the driving force right through to distribution. • They are the overall decision makers. Producers will come up with story ideas and hire writers or choose and secure rights to scripts. • They work with creative ideas from the director and approve production costs. They spot and solve potential problems throughout the production process. They approve locations and hire a team of staff for the production, delegating certain responsibilities to a line producer. It’s their job to create a good working environment and they constantly communicate with everyone to make everything run smoothly.

  11. Emma Thomas • She is an English film producer, known for frequent collaborations with her husband, the filmmaker Christopher Nolan. • Her producing credits include The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005–2012), The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017) and Tenet (2020).
