  1. Academic Registry: What do we do? What can we do to help you?Dr Jon OwenAcademic Registrar Friday 29th January 2010 http://www3.uwic.ac.uk/English/registry/Pages/home.aspx

  2. Preparing for the award ceremony • pre-requisites • students are enrolled on the correct programme • students have handed-in their assessments • appropriate assessments have been (double-)marked [definitions available] • examining boards have made clear, consistent and equitable decisions • material to be covered • key principles for the examining board • inputting marks to CAMS • decisions, including borderlines • not in scope of this presentation • suspected unfair practice • mitigating circumstances • many details

  3. Key principles • CAMS has been programmed to encapsulate UWIC regulations • CAMS includes PSRB requirements for specific programmes and “knows about” approved core modules • CAMS “suggests” decisions; the examining board makes the decisions • examining boards should make consistent decisions • examining boards have discretion (within the regulations) • if CAMS is not used for an examining board, then the “decisions” made are provisional until marks entered, calculations run and all chair’s actions completed • if a decision is made outside regulations, then no transcript can be provided to the student

  4. Inputting marks to CAMS • please send your marks as soon as you have them to the Collaborative Provision Office • can input marks for individual assessments • good idea to get coursework marks entered as soon as possible, rather than leaving it to near the examination period • reports are available from CAMS, and more are being developed • help is available from School Registry Officers and the MIS Unit, and via the Collaborative Provision Office • a new student and academic information system is being commissioned

  5. Decisions, decisions … • Pass and progress • Pass and award (a classification) • Compensate • Re-assessment • Re-take • a module, as first, second or (for undergraduate) third and final attempt • the year, as a first attempt (having failed 50% credits or more) • Trail a module • Defer decision (requiring a later chair’s action) • Fail: required to withdraw

  6. Further information on examining boardshttp://www3.uwic.ac.uk/English/registry/exams/Pages/ExamBoards.aspx • borderline cases • compensation • within a module • across the profile • original mark is recorded on the transcript (mark is not “raised”; credit is awarded) • exit awards • training for examining board chairs (5th May) • Academic Registry staff attend all examining boards (School Registry Officers and colleagues in Assessment and Awards) • “emergency help” phoneline during the examining board period (extensions: 7030, 6039) • if in doubt, please ask us
