  1. CDRC CDRC September 2008NEWSLETTER Chobham & District Riding Club Dear Members, Those of you who have participated in Club events this year will already have many good experiences under your belt. Our Bank Holiday Show was a day that many of you will have enjoyed and I am grateful to Lucy and Lee, the proprietors of Langshot Equestrian Centre for being so accommodating and welcoming, and to members of the Committee and other supporters who worked really hard to make the day a success.  While Riding Club membership nationally appears to be in decline, we are doing well in attracting new members to Chobham; I hope that the various opportunities and outings that are detailed in this newsletter will appeal and that we will see many of you over the Autumn season.  With best wishes, James Parker, Chairman Chobham and District Riding Club AGM When: Wednesday 15th October 2008 at 7.30pm Where: Lyne Village Hall This year’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 15th October in Lyne Village Hall at 7.30pm. The committee will stand for re-election by the members at this meeting. We will be presenting the 2,000 cheque to the Surrey Air Ambulance and hearing from them about the invaluable work of the Air Ambulance crew. In addition, the CDRC annual trophies will be awarded at the meeting for the highest placed senior or junior in each discipline at the CDRC summer shows.

  2. CDRC Sept 2008 CDRC Bank Holiday Summer Show On Bank Holiday Monday, Langshot Equestrian Centre was host once again to the CDRC Bank Holiday Summer Show. The turnout was fantastic and we were pleased to see a large number of CDRC members competing on the day across all disciplines. The show jumping classes were well attended with a massive 44 competitors taking part in the 2ft 3 show jumping. So, it was a very happy Katie Ederley that took first and third place on her horses in the 2ft 3 class, after winning first and second in the 2ft. Sam Kerr made all the turns to try to steal the 2ft3 class but couldn’t quite beat Katie’s fastest time. However, Sam had a successful day and was placed again in the 2ft6 class, which was won by Emma Kampa. It was quite a day for member Adie Callaghan (pictured) who won the Astral Star Trophy for the ridden cob class, and went on to be crowned show champions in the judge’s choice ridden championship. Becky Partridge and Duke Oddbod winner of the pony club pony class were awarded reserve champion. The preliminary 10 dressage was won by Sarah Poulter with a very impressive 71%. Becky Blackmore was the highest placed member in the class taking 3rd place, pipped to 2nd place by Louise Hearn. Becky has been a key member on the team dressage this year for CDRC and we hope she will continue to ride for the club next year. Another key member for the club in the team dressage competitions this year is Jo Horwood. Jo was also competing in the Prelim 10 class at the show and took 6th place with 65.9% Once again, our thanks and gratitude to the volunteers and committee members who gave up their time to judge, steward and worked hard to make the day a success. A full list of results will be posted to the website. And all that’s left to do now, is for the Committee to go through the results of the Air Ambulance and Summer Shows and award the annual club trophies to the highest placed members. Trophies will be awarded at the AGM in October

  3. CDRC Sept 2008 CDRC Out and About 6 July 2008 - Chobham entered a team into the London and South East Team Show Jumping Area Qualifier The event was held at Newlands Corner and the team consisted of Sian Rees Smith on Harley, Abi Ellis on Oscar and Jackie Teale on Chelsea. With Hannah Peyton our fourth member unable to compete and no reserve waiting in the wings we were down to just three and the pressure was on! Although the fences weren’t particularly large, the fillers were bright and intimidating which more than compensated for the height. They were proving problematic for many of the riders and unfortunately caught out our first rider at a rather florescent orange fence, who was eliminated just a fence from the finish! Myself and Chelsea were next to go and produced a clear round. We were followed by Abi and Oscar who had a good round and an unlucky four faults. Sadly, without a fourth rider, we were now out of the competition. We momentarily wondered if we dressed Oscar in Chelsea’s boots and numnah and introduced him as our long lost team mate…….and that’s where it ended. We quickly realised we were representing Chobham Riding Club so that wasn’t an option. But, winning isn’t everything and the main thing is that we had fun. I felt for Sian at this point because it’s horrible when you feel like you have let the team down (cough cough er – Aston-le walls…did someone say water?) but we all decided to stay for the second round and by the time it started, so indeed had the rain. Sian was determined to get over the dreaded orange fence and she did just that. She had one stop at the next fence, then they were over it. Everyone thought we were mad clapping and cheering as if Sian had won the class, but to have just one stop at a fence then get straight over it was a battle won for Sian and we look forward to them going clear next year! With no team left to represent and individual placings at stake what else could we do but…GO FOR IT! By adding two time saving turns and keeping a controlled pace (yes, we can do it sometimes!) myself and Chelsea shaved 9 seconds off the leaders time, but were unlucky to have a fence down. Abi and Oscar were next to go and produced a clear round in a good time. As soon as we finished we loaded the wet horses and our wet tack away and were off to the burger van for some much needed burger-age! Ultimately six out of the nine teams qualified and had we of had a fourth team member, we could well have been one of those six. Jackie Teale

  4. CDRC Sept 2008 CDRC Out and About Dressage to Music Qualifiers 13 July The Area and National Dressage to Music qualifier competition was once again hosted by Chobham & District Riding Club at Langshot Equestrian Centre. The overall turnout for such an important event was low but this did not detract from an enjoyable day with some very good performances. Clubs from Area 11 represented at the competition included Newlands Corner, Elstead and Farnham Riders, with a bumper crop! Many of the regular competitors were there but many with new horses and new routines. It is always good to see familiar faces! Winners of the National sections will be competing at Addington Manor on the 4th/5th October. We were highly encouraged to see a few of the CDRC members taking part – particularly with the massive work and effort which was made as they were all in the Music with Costume sections. Highly commendable performances from Debra Powell and Merlin in the Pas Seul and Annette Payne and Lorna Bradstreet with Bailey's, Little and Big in the Pas de Deux drew a good crowd of local support who were rewarded with very entertaining performances. Netty and Lorna are qualified through to the Area Finals which will be held at Sands Farm, Horsham, on October so make a date in the diary to go along to watch. Thank you, as ever, to Sara Green, Ann and John Foss who did a sterling job with the stewarding and the extra complicated scoring. We have been approached by the Sandhurst Drag Hunt - http://www.sandhurstdraghunt.co.uk/ with an invitation for Riding Club members to join their Clear Round Cross Country day which will take place on September 13th at Blacklands Farm, Elstead (full details on the website). I am also in discussion with them about the possibility of discounts for any members who would like to take part in their hunt calendar through this winter. If you would like further details, please let me know. Also, we traditionally receive discount vouchers from the Surrey Union Hunt - http://www.foxhunters.net/surreyunion/key.htm - although I have not heard from they yet for this season. If you are interested let me know and I will approach them. Finally, Vanessa Lawes is involved with the Hunt around Petworth and would welcome anyone interested to join a day. Further details, as always, from Claire. Joining the Hunt

  5. CDRC Sept 2008 CDRC Out and About Hickstead Royal International Show On July 27th, Chobham & District sent 4 teams to the team of three show jumping at Hickstead Royal International Horse Show. With 80 teams taking part, the day was long, but one of Chobham and District teams once again came home in the rosettes. Sharon Teale on Highland Warrior, Bev Smallridge on Catania and Tiffany Manning on Rhyfendigad Sinbad were pipped to first place by just 4 seconds. Left to right: Tiff Manning, Bev Smallridge, Sharon Teale This remarkable achievement, repeated our success from 2006 and hopefully next time we will finally get their hands on first prize. . This year the HOYS at the NEC in Birmingham will have an extra pull for some of the Club members. After a very successful showing season with her new horse Roulade, VANESSA LAWES – our Show jumping and Cross Country trainer will be competing in the SEARCH FOR A STAR – RIDING CLUB HORSE section on Wednesday 8th October. I am sure that CDRC members will be keen to lend their support, along with an excuse to visit HOYS – so if you are interested in a trip to Birmingham please contact Claire Valvona as soon as possible to arrange some tickets and transport. Tickets are for the day and evening sessions, from £24.50 with a discount for a group of 12 or more.
