Greenhouse Safety Mr. Kee West Carroll Jr./Sr. High School
Objectives TSW review common accidents that occur in the greenhouse. TSW discuss chemical safety. TSW discuss greenhouse rules.
Common Injuries • The list of injuries that commonly occur at greenhouses throughout the country is quite long, and should be no surprise. Here is a partial list: • Slips, trips and falls • Injuries due to repetitive bending, stooping, overreaching or the repeated use of hands, fingers and wrists for long periods of time • Back injuries from improper or heavy lifting • Being struck by large pots or other objects improperly stacked on shelves • Cuts to fingers or hands • Getting fingers, hands or other body parts caught in potting machines, conveyor belts or other equipment
Chemical Safety • Only the instructor will handle pesticides with the exception of less toxic substances. Such as insecticidal soap and round-up. • Before going into the greenhouse students will take the Worker Protection Standards workshop and recieve their WPS certification. • While in the greenhouse or garden area and you are exposed to toxic chemicals tell the instructor immediatly. • The three most common ways that you can have chemical exposure are: • Oral- by ingesting chemicals • Dermal- by getting chemicals on your skin • Inhilation- by breathing in fumes
Greenhouse Rules • No horseplaying • Throwing things • Squirting each other with hose • No running • If injured tell instructor at once • If you see someone being unsafe tell the instructor • No food or drinks in greenhouse • Do not change greenhouse settings • Keep walk-ways clear of clutter • Put things back where you got them from
To get your WPS certification I am required to train you in pesticide safety. Even though you will not be a pesticide handler you will be around pesticides and will need to know what to do if exposed. Watch the following videos and don’t fall asleep!!! http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/aginfo/pesticid/wps.htm
