  2. What are social media? • According to Oxford’s English Dictionary, social media are “web sites and applications… [that] enable users to create and share content to participate in social networking.”

  3. Social Media Through the Years • 1971 – The first email was delivered from two computers a meter apart • 1994 - Yahoo! GeoCities launches allowing anyone to create an internet site • 1997 – AOL Instant Messenger launches (♥ AIM) • May 2003 – LinkedIn • September 2003 – MySpace (Top 8 Social Media Sites of all time) • July 2007 – CNN-YouTube Presidential Debates • June 2011 – Anthony Weiner posts a sexually suggestive picture on Twitter when he meant to send a DM

Romney “How the Presidential Candidates Use the Web and Social Media.” Pew Research Center. • Obama spent four times as much as Romney and also had a larger online response from social media “networkers” than Romney • Romney’s campaign talked about Obama approximately a third of the time while Obama only talked • Both candidates used social media as a platform to get their messages out • Discussed same topics differently • Ex. Economy – Romney focused on jobs while Obama’s message was more philosophical
