It’s About How and Why? EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DID WHY IT MAKES SENSE TELL ME DRAW IT SHOW US • Why do we carry the one? • What is “the one” • When we “borrow” do we ever give it back? • Do we pay interest? • Do my parents estimate? • What is x & why are we always looking for it? • Who can belong to the quadrilateral family? • Does the rhombus do the rumba? • Are we really the only country IN THE WORLD that uses customary measurement? I encourage the students to always wonder & ask why we say & do certain things in math.
We All Do Math! • Math happens everywhere we go • Room 559 is not the only place for math, but if students don’t recognize math in the real world, they’ll think it only takes place in one room. • Help your child see the math you do • Money, cooking, measuring, buying, building, travel rates…& generally making life work! • Ask your child what they’ve learned • “Tell me something…” • Help students think about their thinking • Kids know what they know…and what they don’t know • Students should say so when they don’t “get” a concept
You Say Tomato, I Say… The “old” math ways “…carry the one…or…borrow” You and I might use them The “not-so-old” math ways “…regrouping” Teens might use them • The “other math” ways • New words for the same concept • “…decomposing & composing” numbers • Now students are being taught these • Many ways lead to a solution! • Today’s kids can know & use all ways • Workshops on Common Core
Our Math Ways: • Students enter the room & read the activboard (Write in planner…take out homework…do 4 problems daily in journal) • 65 minutes for math (5 to unpack, 5 to pack up, 55 to learn) • Grade papers (Discuss questions on the homework, trade & grade, check mistakes, turn-in) • New lesson (May be notes for math notebook, ActivBoard, Brainpop, YouTube) • Activity time (May be manipulatives, drawing math, a game, or independent practice) • Examine the next homework/assignment • Pack up!
Fixing Our Math: Math Grades are for: Daily Assignments & Homework, Budget Books, Problem Solving, Daily 4, Weekly Quizzes, Tests & Projects. Daily 4 are Mon-Thurs (16). All other items are on my math calendar on my website. Four 5th grade math teachers: planning, structure, grades. • Homework not done? (Turn it in late for a max 75% or go get a make-up assignment & do it while we grade papers) • Got a low grade? (If below a 70, re-do for a 75. Or go get a make-up assignment to replace the low grade) • Got a low test grade? (I can give a make-up test) • Don’t know multiplication tables? (Study, study, study) • Really don’t understand a concept? (Come see me before school 7:30-7:55 or after school 3:05 – 3:30, if I do not have a school duty that week)
Thankyou for coming! Pleasesign up for an individualconference.
