BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A CHURCH BOARD • The chairperson is the pastor • Leadership is always a district licensed or ordained minister • Board members are elected yearly • Program heads are usually board members (S.S., NYI, NMI) • Finances come from tithes and offerings • Close ties to the district and general church. • By laws are the Manual of the Church of the Nazarene and the local church cannot alter them. • Property is automatically given to the district if the church decides to change denominations. • Property is purchased by the board with approval of the membership.
BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ANon Profit BOARD • The chairperson is elected by the Board according to the by laws • Leadership can be a layperson or clergy • Board members are elected according to the by laws and often serve for several years. • Program heads are usually paid staff and are not on the board. • Finances come from donations, grants, and programs • Casual ties to the district and general church. • By laws are adopted and written by the board and can be altered whenever desired. • Property is purchased by the board and full liability lies with them. • Property belongs to the non profit board and can be given to any non profit when they dissolve.
