A little bit of history • 1979-- Started with audio teleconferencing (speakerphones and “bridge”) • 1984—initiated use of audio teleconferencing at UCF • 1986—added freeze-frame technology • 1990—computer conferencing through Compuserve • 1991—electronic mail through FIRN • 1993--ITFS (microwave television) • 1994—ITFS and satellite television, and audio conferencing • 1996-to present--use Web solely

  4. 1. Interact with students at ALL sites It’s called Interactive TVnotBroadcast TV. Some type of interaction about every 5-7 minutes. Call on site first. Use names.

  5. 2. Use an outline not a script You must have a plan and use it. Time to start and stop is critical—in satellite talk “the bird flies away.” Use a watch.

  6. 3. Wear appropriate attire Dress as you would teaching in-person then review the tape to see if this is how you want to look. For the camera be aware of colors and patterns that “won’t work.” Be comfortable.

  7. 4. Maintain eye contact Look at students in-person and Look at camera (students are behind the camera). Practice this technique.

  8. 5. Vary your voice Show excitement in your voice. Vary tone and pitch and even volume (a little). Project. Enunciate clearly. Slow down.

  9. 6. Vary facial expressions It is video—move those facial muscles. Smile. Frown. Open your eyes.

  10. 7. Use some gestures Must “match” to the presentation. Slow movements within camera range. Don’t “block” your face or visuals.

  11. 8. Movement Move—within viewing area. Assume you are always on camera. Again-- slow movements.

  12. 9. Use the equipment as appropriate Practice before the course. Request support (GTA, students) To use some of the technologies while you are interacting Shows you are human. You may want to use ITV for student presentations.

  13. 10. Use visuals. Keep them “clean.” Vary what you use. Computer, overhead camera with models or real objects.

  14. Enjoy ITV Relax, breathe, and enjoy the experience. Be yourself--generally. Remember--you are the “TALENT”
