Participating School Districts • Allegany-Limestone • Andover • Cuba-Rushford • Genesee Valley • Hinsdale • Olean • Pioneer • Portville • Randolph Academy • Salamanca • Scio • West Valley • Wellsville
Goals of the Grant • To improve the quality of all educational assessments, while also… • Reducing the number of assessments that do not contribute to teaching and learning. CA BOCES and LCI will coach members in identifying high-quality assessments already in use for instructional or other curricular purposes that can simultaneously be used for APPR purposes, eliminating redundant or low-quality assessments, and developing new ones, if needed.
Who’s Involved? • Learner Centered Initiatives, Ltd. • CA BOCES Professional Development Team • Existing Team (including embedded staff developers) • Grant/Assessment Coordinator (10-months) • Participating School Districts
What’s the Plan? • Audit/Review assessments in the school district to determine quality, purpose, usefulness, redundancy, etc. of educational assessments. • Create an action plan to modify existing assessments, reduce existing assessments, create new assessments. • Implement the action plan through an assessment design institute. • Increase the assessment literacy across content areas.

Which tests will be audited? • Generally speaking, the following three types of tests will be audited: • Summative • Interim • Benchmark • Also, there is a focus in the grant on performance and portfolio assessment. This may influence the assessments you choose to modify or design in the design phase.
What criteria are being used? • Purpose of the assessment • Skills, knowledge, behavior required by the standards • Comparability • Alignment • Rigor • Reliability • Ability to inform instruction and support learning • Use of diverse assessment technique
Two Types of Teams Audit/Review Design • 5 – 7 people • Review tests for the district and create an action plan. • Wide range of stakeholders. • Most involvement in the fall. • 3-5 people • Design tests based on the action plan. • More specific range of stakeholders. • Most involvement in the winter and spring.
Audit Review Team Team Composition Team Size • The team is comprised of staff who (5-7 people): • Represent all levels of the district. • Represent a district-wide perspective. • Include a school leader. • Are aware of the needs of different student populations. • The group size in manageable given: • The demands of the review. • The size of the district • Complexity of the assessment repertoire. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014
Audit/Review Team Example • Team Composition: • The elementary principal, a middle school guidance counselor, a high school lead teacher, an ESL teacher, a district curriculum supervisor, the pupil personnel services director. • Team Size • The group is small enough to sit at one table, but not so small as to leave representative voices out. • Notes • It will make sense for some small-to-mid sized districts to have one audit/review team. • It will make sense for some mid-to-large sized districts to have more than one audit/review team. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014
Audit Review Team Team Capacity • All members of the group understand: • The purpose of the grant. • Have protected the time and space to accomplish the work. • Understand how the work of the grant connects back to student learning. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014
Audit Review Team Team Leadership Leadership Responsibilities • The contact person is interested in taking on the responsibilities associated with being the contact person. He or she has been, and feels empowered to make decisions about how the work is accomplished. • Understanding the demands and expectations of the grant. • Managing communication. • Ensuring follow through. • Facilitating technology supports (e.g., Google Docs, etc.) • Keeping and eye on the intended goal of the project.
