Deciduous Forest Locations • Deciduous forests can be found in the Eastern United States, Europe, parts of Asia, and small portions of South America and Australia • Deciduous forests are unique to other forests because they have four distinct seasons: fall, winter, spring, and summer • The trees in deciduous forests lose their leaves each fall unlike jungles or pine trees in Taigas

Biome Climate Description • The purpose of this page is to describe the yearly variation of your biome’s climate in terms of its precipitation, temperature, humidity, and seasons • Requirements: • Temperature, precipitation, humidity, seasons • What unique geographic features cause your biomes climate?

9. Deciduous Forest Climate • Deciduous Forests have almost 14 inches of rain in the winter months and more than 18 inches of rain in the summer. • Mild summers averaging about 70 °F. Summer months usually begin in early June and end in late August. • Winter temperatures are fairly cool with an average temperature of a little below freezing • Almost all Deciduous Forests are located by oceans and the latitude range is anywhere from 23 ° north to 38 ° south.

Darling Deciduous Forest Animals Continued Coyote White-Tail Deer Only males have antlers Males can weigh up to 400 pounds • Coyotes can live almost anywhere but originated in the grasslands These animals can survive the cold winters in the deciduous forest by making a shelter and with their thick fur. Some animals like the black bear will hibernate during the winter. In the warm summer months these animals will shed fur to stay cool.

17. Deciduous Forest Plants American Beech Carpet Moss Mosses are simple, rootless evergreen plants Grows on many things including streambeds, trees, and the “carpets” the ground • Grows best in moist, rich soil • Height: 90 – 100 feet

Deciduous Forest Plants Continued White Birch Tawny Milk Cap Mushroom An edible mushroom found in most deciduous forests They are neither plants or animals – belong to fungi family • It only lives 140 years (not long of trees) • It has white bark that easily peels off The trees in deciduous forests have thick bark to survive the winter and they have the ability to regrow their leaves during spring and summer. Some plants die during the fall and winter but come back to life during warmer months.

Interpreting Your Climatograph • The purpose of this slide is to explain the climate of your biome based upon the climatograph from the previous slide • Requirements: • Does the temperature change significantly through out the year? If so, during what months? • Does the temperature change significantly through out the year? If so, during what months? • How does the temperature and precipitation affect the plants and animals found in your biome?

Interpreting the Deciduous Forest Climatograph • The temperature is warm in the summer (May – August) and nearly freezing during the winter months • The precipitation ranges from a low of 6 inches in October to a high of 13 inches in January. • The summer months are hot which means plants and animals must remain cool. Because the weather is below freezing in winter months, animals must find warmth by creating a shelter, growing more fur, or building up body fat
