5. Missouri’s Role in The Mississippi River The State of Mississippi river flows through. St. Louis is also where the Mississippi River starts. The Missouri River serves as a tributary of the Mississippi. The Missouri River essentially connects Kansas and St. Louis. It and the Mississippi River are commercially navigable over their entire lengths in Missouri.
