9. L5 Has a code on it which spreads the bandwidth wider. The advantages of L5 are that multipath and noise are reduced. Having two codes (ie L1 & L5) allows computation of the ionosphere. It is also a stronger signal which allows better reception under tress and possibly indoors too. AGD did some research with students and found about a 7 – 10 db loss under trees which is approx the gain for the new signal.

10. Russia’s GLONASS Similar to GPS, originally developed by the USSR (now Russian Federation). Also military controlled.
GPS is CDMA-based (ie uses codes to distinguish sats), GLONASS is FDMA (ie uses frequency to distinguish sats).
Fully operational in 1996, and now (Nov11) back to 24 functioning satellites.
The first GLONASS-K satellite was launched in Feb 2011 transmitting a new CDMA signal called L3 (1202.025 MHz) as well as the legacy FDMA signals There is also talk of a Glonass L5 signal but nothing concrete.
