Proper Nouns Places: Times Square, Beaver Stadium, Penn State, Carnegie Hall, Starbucks, Best Buy, etc. Names: Dr. Jones, Principal Butler, Khalid, LeBron James, President Barack Obama, etc. Cities/States/Countries: State College, Pennsylvania; Hollywood; LA, Berlin; China; Florida; Russia; etc. Brands: Oreo, Nike, Air Jordan, North Face, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, UGG, Old Navy, etc.

  5. Months, Days, and Seasons My birthday is March 6, 1988. Thankfully, my birthday is during spring break. I think it is on a Tuesdaythis year. The month of May is my favorite month. However, Friday is usually my favorite day of the week.

  6. Geographic Regions or Directions Only capitalize when referring to specific regions. I am from the Midwest, but I went to school in the South. (refers to regions in the U.S.) The desk should face the north wall. (refers to directions) *Sophomores and freshmen generally have classes in the (south, South) Building.

  8. Words Derived from Proper Nouns I love Chinese food! (Derived from “China”) Hamlet is a famous Shakespearean tragedy. New Yorkers possess unique personalities. What needs to be capitalized? Why? Olive garden is no match for authentic italianfood! A big mac is considered the america’sfavorite burger.

  9. Names of Courses 1.Chemistry II has been my most difficult course. 2. James often complains about History 241. 3. My friend, Douglas, enjoys geography class. Is there something wrong here? We know you all look forward to english class! Daniel wants to study biology in college.
