  1. My Daughter is a Little HIPPY! The HIPPY Program at Southside, Arkansas

  2. Mission • “HIPPY or Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters is a home-based early childhood education program for parents of three, four, and some five year old children. Parents, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. You have what it takes to make a meaningful difference in your child’s life- the gift of TIME; spend it wisely; spend it with your child.”(HIPPY, 2011)

  3. Services • Home visits • Home lesson materials • Access to extra materials, equipment, and space • One- on-one instruction • Referral services • Monthly group meetings

  4. Who does that? • Community members who meet requirements: Age requirements for children Income requirements for parents

  5. Who’s Runnin’ This Show? • State Director—Barbara Gilkey • Program Coordinator—Lorie Satterwhite • Homebased Educators—Kristie Kennedy (our very own), Mary Hammer, Marla Strother, and Jamie Shane. • Parent/Guardian—Me and Aunt Pam (or Pae, as my daughter calls her) • Child

  6. Where did this all start? • The first HIPPY Program began, oddly enough, in Israel. • Dr. Avima Lombard—Native of Israel • Hebrew University in Jerusalem, 1969 developed the first HIPPY Program. • 1984—first programs in United (HIPPY, 2011).

  7. How did they get that job? • Program Coordinator—Usually has a degree in Early Childhood and other qualifications. • Homebased Educator—Trained by the Program Coordinator and requires several other skills: • Mature • Good communication skills • Works well with others • Cares about community

  8. Diversity • They serve families that are multicultural and from generally low socio-economic backgrounds to give children a head start or boost before they start kindergarten.

  9. What I find surprising! • I find it incredibly surprising how easily accessible the program and its coordinators are. • I find it surprising how well my “little hippy” has responded to the homebased educator, Mrs. Kristie and the resources we have been able to use so far.

  15. Populations Served • Students, Faculty and Staff at UACCB. • Community members of Batesville and surrounding areas.

  16. Organization • Library Director—Linda Bennett • Library Technicians—Jo Hirschy, Bethany Richardson, and Carolyn Shields. • Work Study students • Information Services Director—Steve Collins • Computer Lab Manager—Cheston Cooper

  17. Training • Mrs. Bennett—Library Director– BA in Education, Masters in Library Science. • Library Technicians usually have a High School diploma, on-the-job training and then possibly some higher education.

  18. Diversity • Everyone is welcomed into the library and all of the staff is very friendly and caring. It is a safe, quiet environment that is conducive to research and study.
