Service/Research/Teaching Balance Personnel Committee 2007-08
PC Evaluation • PC evaluates research/teaching/service • AFR evaluation • Question: What is the yardstick for excellence in our department? • Multiple models to define excellence
Models • Research forms a baseline for excellence • Up or down based on other criteria • “Research is king” • Uniform model applied to all AFRs • Another model: • Excellence is not absolute • Different paths to achieve excellence • Depends on where one is in their career
Achieving Excellence • Junior faculty • Research is super important • External visibility • Excellent teaching portfolio • For others: • Need a minimum level of activity in all 3 criteria • Different areas of focus • Reward excellence in other areas • Examples: • Lead an effort for a center/expeditions • Nationally prominent service
Discussion questions • What model do we value? • How do we translate these values into yardsticks for PC evaluation? • How do we provide the right incentives? • PC hands out carrots, no sticks • High risk, strategic endeavors, teaching initiatives
