  1. November 8, 2010 Censorship

  2. Warm-up • In the Warm-up section of your binder, respond to the question: • What is Censorship?

  3. Censorship • “The control of the information and ideas circulated within a society… for the purpose of altering or suppressing ideas found to be objectionable or offensive.” • Source: http://gilc.org/speech/osistudy/censorship/index.html

  4. ALA’s 100 Most Challenged Books • With a partner, identify the texts on the ALA’s 100 Most Challenged Books of 2000-2009 in which you are familiar with. • Write a sentence or two about why (in your opinion) each book might have been banned from the classroom. • Once finished, individually write three of four sentences about whether or not you feel that censorship should play a role in the education system.

  5. Exit Ticket • Based on your stance on censorship, choose one of the two questions to respond to for the exit ticket. • If it were up to you, what book would you ban from high school classrooms and why? • What book would you fight for to be taught in high school that is on the ALA’s 100 Most Challenged Books from 2000-2009 and why?
