Stephen F. Austin By Nathan Whittington
Early life Stephan Fuller Austin was born in Virginia on November 3, 1793, and raised in Missouri from the time he was 5 years old.He moved to Texas in 1820. His father was Moses Austin, who actually started settling people in Texas, but died and left it up to Stephen.
Adulthood • Stephen worked as an Empressario (setting up land grants for settlers) until 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain. Since then, he worked to free Texas from Mexico, fighting battle after battle. At first all he wanted was peace, but soon, war was the only option, and he had no choice but to lead the Texas army.
The Revolution • Stephen F. Austin led many of the major battles, and had something to do with every battle. He was even at one point arrested for treason. He was one of the most critical military figures in the fight for Texian Independence. Not every one has the courage to lead an army. VS.
Final years • Stephen F. Austin served as secretary of state until his death on December 27, 1836. He left all of his belongings to his older sister. He was important to Texas history because he shows us that if we want something done, sometimes it’s worth fighting for.
