What is a Wiki? • A wiki is intended to be a collaborative workspace - a place where a group of people can go online and work together to craft new content. • A wiki is continuously “under revision.” • It is a living collaboration whose purpose is the sharing of the creative process and product by many. • One famous example is Wiki-pedia, an online encyclopedia with no “authors” but millions of contributors and editors. • The word "wiki" comes from Hawaiian language, meaning "quick" or "fast." Set Up • The ability to import student ids and passwords quickly. (teacher designated names and ids). • Guidelines clearly stated. • No names • No school identification • Wiki not available to the public • Wiki IS available to all parents and teachers • Letter given to parents/guardians with the students’ user name and password. The responses were wonderful and beyond my expectations. The only problem was they were always on task, it was difficult to stop them. Who wants to squash creative energy. Maintenance not a problem. Daily time was less than 5 minutes. Ability to plan ahead and turn on discussion questions and projects when we were at that chapter or introduced to a character. The Great Stuff
Take Aways • Decide what you want to control and what impedes creativity or your time • Monitor Monitor Monitor at the beginning. They are counting on your feedback. • Then step away and let the discussion unfold and just participate.
Ralph Fletcher "You learn to write by grappling with a real subject that truly matters to you." Georgina is in 5th grade and her brother Toby is in 3rd. They are relatable characters. Writers Workshop Strategies: 1. Ability to think through their response before drafting it in Word and then posting it in the Wiki. 2. Peer conferencing takes place in real time. We helped each other and added to the response. We used constructive feedback. 3. Ability to form questions and seek input from peers. Elements: 1. How to (Georgina wrote a how to list for stealing the dog and we are going to create our own how to on the wiki and they will be actually following their class collaborative how project and see if it works) They are building Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches. 2. Predictions - about characters, setting, alternative endings 3. Empathy for the characters and seeing another's point of view. That Mookie character is very intriguing to them. (If you want to know ask a Penn student or eventually an Edwards student). I'll share too but they really love to explain Mookie the character.
