Climate Change and Air Pollution • Climate change is a rising problem in Dubai • Keeping the environment healthy is not a priority in Dubai, which results in global warming • Dubai itself is a large contribution to climate change • The greenhouse gas that is being released into the air is greater in Dubai than the world average • In Dubai, the fossil fuel use and the carbon dioxide levels are rising due to public transportation

3. To Start Off… • Dubai was a role model to other countries, though now with the economical issues, they are no longer a good example. • Dubai is lacking energy sources, due to the high usage of energy in major businesses • According to scientists, a nuclear future awaits • Dubai relies on technology for protection from terrorists • Ecologists worry; UAE was named the #1 least environmentally friendly

4. Seas and Water Pollution • Water is the biggest problem in Dubai • The salinity levels continue to grow, leaving the citizens with only seawater to drink. In order for freshwater, citizens need desalination plants • Seawater goes through desalination (to rid of salt). The remaining salt goes back into the sea, which results in more polluted waters • Fresh water irrigates the tropics; polluted water, no irrigation • Sea levels continue rising

5. Oil in Dubai • Dubai has/needs cheap oil in order to survive, along with limited oil sources • Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of Dubai’s most important oil companies, along with the world. • Dubai soon wants to switch to nuclear energy instead of oil to be more environmentally friendly • United States doesn’t want that to happen, due to the fact that they can use oil to make nuclear weapons • Oil is DESTROYING sea life

6. Natural Resources, Environment and Solutions • The environment has been a major issue in Dubai • The three major environmental problems are: air and noise pollution, crowded buildings and low air circulation and traffic issues • A solution in Dubai is that they are building more roads to prevent traffic and they are moving buildings to create more space and less traffic • Solar energy will be used • There will be a new thermal insulation, which will result in less heat and less fossil fuels • Dubai is finally shifting to better energy, they have been trying to for 50 years.

7. Human Use and Waste • All waste products from the citizens are pumped back into the sea • Dubai, as a whole, use four billion water bottles daily (equivalent: four days of fresh water) • In Dubai, For every 600 cars, there are 1000 people • Each average household in Dubai uses 730 kilograms of waste • Each person in Dubai used twice the amount of resources as a Britain

8. The Future • Future depends and relies on cheap energy, oil and the consumption of (human) energy • Trying to make more environmental friendly buildings, due to the fact that they find it difficult to save energy on a desert • A new project (revolving skyscraper) will provide renewable energy. The power will be made from wind turbines located on each floor. The different angles, along with the rotation, will result in an energy surplus; used for other buildings. • Open land will be turned into homes (an increase in money). This strategy will be made to try to move away from the oil.

Reduce,Reuse and Recycle • Recycling needs to become a huge habit in Dubai • Dubai has the second highest level of waste in America • In order to find a solution, recycling cities are being developed for glass, aluminum, cans and plastic • Dubai is developing new plans everyday to improve their environmental issues. • Plans include distributing more environmentally friendly bag bags and cartonsto stores, to sell

10. Hydropolis • Hydropolis is the first luxury underwater hotel • 3 different sections. (1. landing station; where one is first welcomed. 2. connection tunnel: train transportation. 3. 220 suites where an estimated 3,000 people will stay. • Other features: parking lot, storage rooms, movie theater, a ballroom, light shows and a marine study lab. • Architecture of this lab is a “physical landmark,” and was originally created for the builder’s (Joachim Hauser) love of water • Constructors believe humans take water for granted (swim in it and waste it) and that without water there is no life. To them, one day Dubai will be an underwater city. • Two quotes said by Hauser are “…The future lies in the sea,” and “… It’s not a project; it’s a passion,” Hauser, architect and designer

11. “The World” Islands • Another artificial island project; mostly inspired by the previous islands, the Palm islands. • These islands have a 14 million debit. The World contains 300 islands, each 5-20 acres and sell for 7-35 million dollars. • The construction of “The World” kills marine life due to the fact that it gives off too much silt (covers oyster beds). • Has four different sections; Snorkler’s Cove, a marine life exhibit which helps the “in danger” marine life by providing protection. • Ecologists believe that providing a new stability for marine life will attract dangerous species. • The World islands are a lose-lose situation. The process of building is killing plant life, spending billions of dollars, damaging the environment and the fresh water source.

Marine Life • Sewage levels pour into the Persian Gulf, which contains the marine life • The high salinity levels put marine life in danger (organisms can not live in too salty of water) • Construction of The World islands are killing marine life • Covering the oyster beds in sludge, which will result in eroded beaches • Too much silt, due to construction, will put marine life in danger • The source of clear, fresh water is being destroyed; kills seaweed and kelp

13. Interesting Facts • If everyone were to live like the average human in Dubai, there would be 4.5 planets needed to provide natural resources • Masdar city, built in Abu Dhabi, will be the first carbon-neutral environment • In one word, Dubai would be described as, “wasteful.” • In order to vacation in Dubai, one needs to be rich • All of, or most of, the residential areas in The World islands are vacant
