Bell Ringer – 05/11 • Which organelle makes proteins? Which organelle makes ATP? • Name 3 body systems Important: Come to ESD this week! Learning Target: We will review how homeostasis occurs on the cellular & systems level. Closure task: I will complete Part 3 of my Critter Project.
Agenda • Cellular homeostasis • System homeostasis • Concept map
Class website is up!! • www.southernbio.weebly.com • Use this website to review the standards and prepare for the EOC.
Homeostasis • How organisms regulate their bodies so that internal conditions remain stable and relatively constant.
Homeostasis: cellular level • The cell membrane allows materials to enter and leave the cell. – responsible for the cell maintaining homeostasis – an internal balance. • This happens in two main ways: passive transport and active transport.
Cell membranes are complex, with proteins and other molecules embedded in them. Transport Protein
Passive Transport • Does not require ATP energy • Molecules move down the concentration gradient (from high concentration to low concentration) • Three types: • Diffusion – the movement of molecules across the cell membrane • Osmosis – the movement of water molecules across the cell membrane • Facilitated Diffusion – the movement of molecules through a membrane protein.
Three types of Passive transport: • Diffusion – the movement of molecules across the cell membrane
Three types of Passive transport: 2. Osmosis – the movement of water molecules across the cell membrane
Three types of Passive transport: 3. Facilitated Diffusion – the movement of molecules through a membrane protein.
Passive Transport, Active TransportFacilitated Diffusion Are these molecules moving with or against the concentration gradient? What kinds of molecules would move this way? How do gradients determine the direction of molecular movement? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvpiLINjv_E
Active Transport • Requires ATP energy • Molecules move up the concentration gradient (from low concentration to high concentration) • Moves through a membrane protein • Usually ions
Passive and Active Transport Membrane transportation • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svAAiKsJa-Y Active & Passive transport • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfy92hdaAH0
Hypotonic, hypertonic, & isotonic: osmosis Analogy: Salt water
Concept map • Follow along with me as we draw a concept map that summarizes homeostasis at the system & cellular level
Work on Critter Project part 3 • As you complete part 3, I will be doing grade conferences.
Exit Slip: 3-2-1 • 3 things that you learned today • 2 things that you already knew • 1 strategy for preparing for the EOC How did you do? Rate yourself! We will review how homeostasis occurs on the cellular & systems level. I completed Part 3 of my Critter Project.
