Eatiquette Public vs Virtual Space • Public space --> interactive design = awkward • Public space --> somplex, baffling, unpleasant, obtrusive, unruly • Internet -> people have adapted to these changes • Internet --> Various cultures have developed each with their governing decree and social norms Nanna Halinen: Thesis Seminar: Presentation 1

  5. Eatiquette As interactive design seeps into the public space it would be irrational to ignore the questions in etiquette that it introduces to those that engage with it. Nanna Halinen: Thesis Seminar: Presentation 1

Eatiquette Etiquette As Design Strength • Etiquette does not = restrictive blockade • Interventions in ruling etiquette of public spaces can be used to introduce play • The designer has to make specific choices to make these breaks in etiquette appear ubiquitous Nanna Halinen: Thesis Seminar: Presentation 1

Eatiquette Is… • Examines how sensory interactive design can dictate etiquette of public spaces, while generating satisfying social milieu to typically intimate settings. • Proposes that breaks in social norm that are typically viewed as hindrance can be utilized in creative ways to compliment a situation rather then take away from it. Restaurants offer satisfying social experiences Restaurant is a public space that exerts some of the most rigid rules in etiquette Restaurants are playgrounds that titillate the senses = perfect grounds for exploring this project Nanna Halinen: Thesis Seminar: Presentation 1

Eatiquette Plan of Action Implementation • Mock up of design concept and written part • Built prototype that showcases restaurant idea, sketches, written documentation on design choices, written and drawn documentation on desired social interaction • It is the careful consideration of how social rules in public realms can be broken to produce “play” that dictates design decisions Design Ideas • Introduce interaction between groups of people in a restaurant that cunningly strikes at social rules • I.e. interactive tables, comm between tables, order off menu, spy on other peoples choices, manipulation via cellphone, sharing intimate information, patrons comm with staff Nanna Halinen: Thesis Seminar: Presentation 1

Studies on interactivity • Christina Bilsland “offline etiquette: the impact of web pages in physical space” • Virtual combined with physical - people’s moral choises • Supports notion that interactive design has capacity to create changes in social etiquette • Uses these to confide by existing social rules of public spaces, however Nanna Halinen: Thesis Seminar: Presentation 1
