  3. Pig Dissection – Why dissect? There are many anatomical similarities to humans: • Placental mammal  Omnivores, therefore digestive tract similar  Skin lacks fur or feathers, therefore similar layers that underline skin

  4. Pig Dissection – Is it unnecessary and/or cruel? • Byproduct of pork industry • Can gain important scientific and medical understanding

Pig Dissection – Duties Person A Read • Reads the lab instructions and makes sure that the dissector is following those instructions. • Asks the teacher for help if the group is having trouble Retrieve/clean-up Tools • Gets the necessary dissecting tools for the group before the lab starts • Washes and thoroughly dries all tools at the end of the lab and shows the teacher before putting them away

Pig Dissection – Duties Person B Record • Records the group’s answers to the lab questions in the work booklet as the dissection is carried out Manage work area • Makes sure lab bench and surrounding area are cleared before the dissection begins (chairs and bags are not in the aisles) • Retrieves aprons for all group members and gloves for the dissector (if necessary) • Monitors group member conduct (no sitting!) • Wipes down the lab bench at the end of the lab • Assists with clean-up as needed

Pig Dissection – Duties Person C Dissect • Carries out the dissection Retrieve/Clean-up Pig • At the start of the lab: retrieves the pig from the teacher and prepares it on the dissecting tray • At the end of the lab: wraps the pig in wet paper towel and places it in the plastic bag provided. Tapes the bag closed and makes sure that the group’s names are on the bag. Places the bag in the bin to be stored overnight in the fridge

Pig Dissection – Safety • Handle scalpel or razor blade with extreme care. • Hold a scalpel as you would a pencil. • Always cut away from your body and away from others. • Cut with a downward motion but never push down very hard to make a cut. (If extreme pressure is required, you have a dull scalpel or require a different instrument.) • Scalpels are not appropriate for bone or cartilage tissue work – use scissors.

  11. Pig Dissection – Safety • Never remove specimens or specimen parts from the classroom. • Properly dispose of dissected materials. • Store specimens as directed by your teacher. • Clean up the work area and return all equipment to the proper place when the dissection is completed. • Wash hands after each dissection.
