Need: Service-Learning • Service-learning combines service objectives and learning objectives with the intent that the activity change both the recipient and the provider of the service. • This change is accomplished through structured service opportunities that link service to self-reflection and self-discovery. • Participants ultimately acquire values, skills, and knowledge.

Goal:Establish Service-Learning Center • Empower students to identify and meet community needs • Structure service opportunities by linking service opportunities to learning goals in any academic area • Enable students to pursue service opportunities by awarding credit and stipend • Benefit both students and the community
Short-Term Goals: • Identified educators who will incorporate service-learning into existing courses • Identified departments who will to grant independent study credit • Identified prospective community groups and Created Request for Proposals (RFP)
Long-Term Goals: • Institutionalize service-learning by establishing a college-wide credit receipt procedure and supportive program. • House the college-wide program within the Office of Student Services or the Undergraduate Student Government. • Create and fund a stipend receipt procedure to subsidize service-learning activities
Timetable: • Spring 2008: Identified interested students, educators, and community groups. • Fall 2008: Execute credit-bearing demonstration program; Target administrators and department chairs. • Spring 2008: Institutionalize credit-bearing program; Apply for funding. • Fall 2009: Execute credit-bearing and stipend-bearing programs.
