Te Whare Tapa Whā – a Māori Health Model • Perhaps the most well know of all Māori health models – first considered by Durie in the mid 1980’s • A translation of Te Whare Tapa Whā reflects the four sides of a house, Te Whare – House – Tapa Whā – with four sides • The model therefore has four main components - Wairua (spiritual dimension) - Tinana (physical dimension) - Hinengaro (mental dimension) - Whānau (family perspectives and interactions)
Te Whare Tapa Whā- like a house each of the walls areconnected and inter-related (holistic)- a healthy wairua must be complemented with a healthy tinana or hinengaro and so on- balance between each is required- a deficit in any of the dimensions can therefore be viewed as being unhealthy
