Math Vocabulary Julieta Rosales
Integer • A member of the set of positive whole numbers
Rational Number • A number capable of being expressed as an integer or a quotient of integers, excluding zero as a denominator.
Scientific Notation • A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. The scientific notation of 10,492, for example, is 1.0492 × 104.
Perfect Square • A number made by squaring a whole number.16 is a perfect square because 42 = 16
Irrational Number • A real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction - the decimal goes on forever without repeating.Example: Pi is an irrational number.
Real Numbers • A number that is either rational or irrational rather than imaginary.
Density Property • To measure the continuous values. A real number can be rational number or irrational number or it may be positive, negative or zero. It may also be algebraic or transcendental.
Adjacent Angles • Either of the two angles that are formed by the intersection of two straight lines and lie on the same side of one line
Coefficient • The number placed before a letter that represents a variable in algebra, e.g. the "3" of "3x" in the equation "3x = 6"
Distance Formula • Any algebraic expression that gives the distance between two points in a particular coordinate system in a particular number of dimensions
Domain • The set of values of the independent variable for which a function is defined
Hypotenuse • The side opposite the right angle in a right-angled triangle
Legs of a right Triangle • The sides of a triangle; - a name seldom used unless one of the sides is first distinguished by some appropriate term; as, the hypothenuse and two legs of a right-angled triangle.
Range • The difference between the lowest and highest values. In {4, 6, 9, 3, 7} the lowest value is 3, and the highest is 9, so the range is 9-3 = 6.Range can also mean all the output values of a function.
Slope • How steep a straight line is.In this example the slope is 3/5 = 0.6
Scientific Notation Where a number is written in two parts: First: just the digits (with the decimal point placed after the first digit),Followed by: ×10 to a power that would put the decimal point back where it should be.
Prism • A solid object that has two identical ends and all flat sides. The cross section is the same all along its length. The shape of the ends give the prism a name, such as "triangular prism"
Scatter Plot • A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data.In this example, each dot represents one person's weight versus their height.
Slope Intercept Form • The equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + b where m is the slope of the line and b is its y-intercept
