  1. Creating An Atmosphere Conducive To Learning… Get your students to say, “Mom and Dad, hurry or we’ll be late for Sunday School!” Know your clients What happens before teaching even begins! Teaching/ Discipline Support and Collaboration

  2. To meet their needs… Know Your Clients ! • Demographics: culture, religion, immigration, family structure, etc • Interests: sports, musical instruments, clubs • Ability level: high, low, average, special needs • Learning Style: Auditory, Visual, Kinesthetic

  3. And Their Challenging Lives… • Get up early and attend- five days of “real” school. “The grades count!” • Work on math and writing homework for at least five evenings (+ weekend school!) • No one likes more school! • Family responsibilities, chores, parties

Be prepared! • Praise, praise, praise several students at a time • Teaching begins before class! • Recognize learning styles • Include Individual and cooperative learning • Make connections to our world! • The best discipline method is an engaging lesson!

  6. Plan with the end in mind! 1.What do I want my students to understand and connect to their world?! Tell students your objectives! 2. Assessment- How will I know they got it? 3. Lessons- Think about Visual/Auditory/Kinesthetic learners! Plan realistically!

Lesson Options/Formats • Visual/Kinesthetic- *Cards for matching vocabulary term/definition, a prophet/story, Arabic word/definitions, etc • Visual/Auditory, Collaborative- *Discussion on text in Seerah, Islamic Studies Example: "If the Prophet Visited You..." • Visual, Collaborative- *Perspective through art. • Investigative, Kinesthetic/Visual *Students create a poster on Islam for non-Muslims. Use few words but express the essence of Islam, etc • Investigative, Collaborative- *Five prophets targeted. Students are assigned to research one prophet during the week. Jigsaw groups to share knowledge, students are “experts” • Auditory/Visual, Collaborative- *Listen to songs from Dawud Wharnsby Ali, Yusuf Islam, Native, Deen, etc. Discuss the lyrics in the context of your lesson’s objectives Prophet Track 5 • Kinesthetic, Collaborative- *Games, games, games: Seerah Jeopardy *fly swatter on Arabic words *Beach ball with Arabic words to be translated

Homework/Assessment Options Using the Computer *Create a crossword puzzle for our Arabic vocabulary using puzzlemaker.com Arabic- Animals Crossword Puzzle puzzlemaker.com *Visit Astrolabe.com and find one text you would buy. What is the title and who is the author? Why did you choose this text? How will it help you learn more about Islam. astrolabe.com *Create a four slide PowerPoint on the most important personality traits of the Sahabah. Explain why these traits are important! How do we acquire them? *Write editorials to Chicago Tribune, NPR, Daily Herald Use what they know !!!
