Why write a resume? • Job application (small job or career) • College application • Scholarship application • Start one now and add to it as you move through your education • Separate yourself from all others (time to brag about yourself)
Objective • The first part of the resume (after name and contact info) • This describes the purpose of the resume • Goal, mission, what you hope to accomplish • Be straight to the point • Supposed to be an incomplete sentence • Ex.: To obtain an entry level position in the architecture field where I can contribute to the success of the company and gain experience for my future as an architect. • Write 3 objectives (job, college, scholarship) • DECA: just write 1 for the job you are applying for
Education • Where did you go? High School Name – School City, State Dates of attendance • What have you learned? • Can include classes; especially AP, honors, PSEO etc. • Will add as you go; only high school right now • Can include GPA • Rule of thumb; only if higher than 3.2 Education North Dakota State University Fargo, ND B.A. Business Administration and Entrepreneurship2010 GPA: 3.8
Work Experience • Where have you worked? • Have you done babysitting? • Volunteering? • Mowed lawns? • Use action words (verbs) Ex. Tips and guidelines • K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) • 1 page maximum resume • Begin descriptions (work and volunteer experience) with action words (verbs) • NO ERRORS • Separate yourself from all others (it’s time to brag about yourself!)
